印章,古称「玺」,是一种凭证信物,在中国已有二千多年的历史,至今仍普遍使用。宋元以前,印章材料多以金、玉、铜、象牙为主,相传王冕以「花乳石」入印,开石印先河。而真正让石材在印坛广泛使用并大放异彩的当数明代文彭,他在偶然中发现质似玉珉而松嫩如石膏的「处州灯光冻」,倡导了洁莹易刻的石印,之後文人治印风气大兴,冲击并替代了传统的金玉印材,而素为印人称道并乐于奏刀的印石三宝乃是田黄石、鸡血石、芙蓉石。

清末时与田黄、鸡血并称“印石之宝”。自古文人墨客、鉴藏家也对芙蓉石百般推崇,清人郭柏苍在《闽产录异》中评“芙蓉似白玉而纯粹,玉不受刀,逊于芙蓉矣”。民国龚纶在《寿山石谱》中认为:芙蓉石温润凝腻,山坑其他石种无法相比,像初开的木芙蓉花。书画篆刻家陈之奋在《寿山石小志》中赞叹:“芙蓉之质与色,直可与田黄、冻石雄峙寿山”。
