Dec. No.3 Reading Notes for 「The Great Gatsby」
The silhouette of a moving cat wavered across the moonlight and turning my head to watch it I saw that I was not alone - fifty feet away a figure had emerged from the shadow of my neighbor's mansion and was standing with his hands in his pockets regarding the silver pepper of the stars. Something in his leisurely movements and the secure position of his feet upon the lawn suggested that it was Mr. Gatsby himself, come out to determine what share was his of our local heavens.

Notes:
The narrator, as I now know his name is Nick, gets to know that Tom had a woman in New York and that Miss Baker is, in fact, a used-to-be famous athlete. Furthermore, Daisy asks if Nick is engaged, getting a reply from him saying that such gossip should be considered a libel, which actually makes him somehow disgusted. The most important thing that happens in this last part of chapter 1 is that finally, the narrator Nick meets Gatsby, though not face-to-face, fifty feet outside his estate who is with an unusual temperament as the description about him goes intriguingly.
