【题目】

Students of a university have a long break between university semesters; the university requires all students to do one of the following for one month during the break:

1. Students must take a course on the subject that has no direct connection to their majors of study (For example a student majoring in engineering may take courses in fine arts or social science)

2. Students must volunteer to work in the university's city or their hometowns to improve some aspects of life of the city or their hometown. (For example, student may help local primary school children with their homework).

Which one do you think is more beneficial for students in their university? Why?

College students usually have several months at their own disposal during summer and winter vacations. It is how they should spend this time period that concerns some universities. In my opinion, compared with volunteer work, learning a course on a different subject is more beneficial for students.

To begin with, learning courses from a different field will gradually equip students with certain skills that cannot be obtained elsewhere. In general, while students majoring in science are often praised for their trained capability of rational analysis, they do sometimes receive criticism on their lack of wild imagination, which is often regarded as a vital strength of art students. Thus, science students, for example, may foster a better sense of creativity after learning arts. With these different skills, students will be able to have a comprehensive perspective on different subjects and thus will be more likely to become successful at school and work.

Second, dabbling in various domains will help students discover their potential interests. In contrast to secondary education, higher education is more specialized. Even with elective courses, students only have a handful of opportunities to learn about knowledge outside of their area. However, college major chosen based on high school experience does not always reflect students’ true passion. That is why many college students decide to switch major in freshman or even sophomore year. That said, through an excursion into a different field and exposure to a new realm of wisdom, students may discover a new hobby or their forte.

Many people would support the option of volunteer work as it provides students with chances to apply what they have learnt in class into practice, and thus serve as a smooth segue into their future work. However, the concern that fledgling workers have trouble transitioning from school to work is unnecessary because companies today usually have a standardized procedure, usually several months, to help new employees to better assimilate into the working environment. In addition, volunteer work is usually limited in terms of type and option, meaning that students’ volunteer work usually deviates much from the content of their first job.

To sum up, volunteer work does benefit students in ways as described above, but there are other ways to accomplish these benefits. And I believe taking a course from a different field comes with advantages that cannot be achieved otherwise.
