The line graph indicates the quantities of road, water, rail and pipeline transport in the UK between 1974 and 2002.
It can be seen in the graph that the road transport was the most popular while the pipeline transport was the least during the 28 years. Both road and pipeline transport rose between 1974 and 2002. In 1974, their quantities of goods transport were 70 and 5 million tonnes, and then those became just under 100 and just over 20 million tonnes in 2002. Both water and pipeline transport had similar quantities (approximately 40 million tonnes) during the first 4 years. After that, water transport was in a gradual rise and it ended at 65 million tonnes while there was a fluctuation between 30 and 40 million tonnes and it ended at 40 million tonnes in 2002. In particular, water transport reached a plateau at 60 million tonnes from 1982 to 1994.
To sum up, the quantities of goods transported in these four ways were increasing from 1974 to 2002. And both road, water and pipeline transport showed an upward trend while the rail transport remained the initial quantity.
