Fellow toastmaster and distinguished guess,
It’s been half a year since my last speech. I still remember the day, it was Aug 31, last year, I lost my words on the stage for 3 minutes in front of full room colleagues in CIC.
Although I try very hard to pretend it doesn’t matter, it holds me back from the stage.
Until one day I saw Patrick post an article titled the secret for success in toastmaster is four words “霸占舞台”-forcibly own the stage, no matter how many books you read, it won’t be better than practice these four words. It give my heart a hit, no matter how I perform on the stage, every time be on the stage is one step closer to toastmaster. That really help me change my view of previous losing-word experience! If you want to become a toastmaster, take all chances to own the stage.
Well, a hit is just a hit, but nothing really happen.
And then more interesting thing shown up, when club member start to set goals in wechat group, it’s another hit. There are many stars in the club promise to finish CC manual this year, and it’s been screenshot by officers. Although I’m glad I am low profile enough that no one put expectation on me, I’ve been encouraged and energized. I privately message to my mentor, I want to finish CC this year too, but please don’t screen shot. I got full encouragement and support from my mentor.
Remember in one of our regular meeting, I’d like to call it goal setting meeting, I heard Adele said transform yourself from the inside. I heard Jing Jin said it’s OK to be IE for P6 even you just finish P2. It’s full of encouragement. In that goal setting regular meeting, almost everybody came to the stage, in front of the video, speak out their goals in toastmaster journey this year. Maybe I was the only one hadn’t come. My mentor also gave me a hint to come to stage. I felt so struggling in my heart and try my best to be calm. My brain pushed me but my feet held me back. I was disappointed by myself too.
Another round of schedule booking competition happened in the wechat group. When I see the nearest spot is today, that push me instantly to occupy it. This small action really makes today’s speech finally happen.
Now I am full of courage that feeds from outside into my heart. Courage is not just the strength for success, but also the unbeatable spirit by frustration. I would speak out that I’m going to finish my CC this year. My mentor don’t have to keep this secret any more. Please give a round of applause! What drives me during the journey is really the three most important things!
First, A good environment! The club create a very supportive and encouraging environment in learning English, public speaking, leadership, and even more, it creates environment for sharing reading and social with different functions by discussing a real work case. I’m so grateful that I am influenced day by day, from every day’s English tips, to every week’s regular meeting.
Second, A good mentor, who will persistently encourage you. When your energy is down, he give a push. It’s time to uncover my “idol” mentor Yuteng!
Third, Make a goal, never too late to make a goal, and after you make a goal, you have high chance to achieve it. Wenlong is my target to follow. Today you do P3 and I do P3, I will chasing you so every time you do speech I will do too. If you don’t progress fast, I won’t wait for you.
A good environment, a good mentor and a good goal, all these three things come naturally after you join the club.
If you want to improve your public speaking, Toastmasters club is the one you can’t miss. When President Joanna ask feedback on the club, I gave these comments right away because these are just in my heart.
