Edmund Blair Leighton (1853–1922) was a 19th-century Pre-Raphaelite artist from England who is best known for his romanticized medieval depictions. He received formal training at the Royal Academy, where he also exhibited for over 40 years. Often his work depicted romantic pursuits in sentimental Victorian themes. This choice was reflective of a revival of public interest in the medieval theme. Leighton's figures were often depicted dressed in elaborate medieval garb and were engaged in romantic or chivalrous pursuits. As a result, weddings were often featured in his works.
The complete title of this painting is To Arms! 'Sweet bridal hymn, that issuing through the porch is rudely challenged with the cry 'to arms'. At the center of this dramatic composition are a young knight and his bride leaving the church following their marriage ceremony. The body language of the couple emphasizes the personalities assigned to them by the artist. The groom takes a strong and authoritative stance while his bride is soft and demure. The elegant clothing of the couple and their guests is emblematic of their high station. The details on the bride's dress are noteworthy and breathtaking. Just as the couple leaves the church they are surprised by a call to arms. The knight in armor has come to summon the groom to join the fight. The wedding guests behind them watch with curious interest, just as the many on the street.
