Your family just arrived at the beach with picnic baskets when a heavy downpour started. Write about your experience during this outing.
As long as it is near the sea, it is bound to be rainy, especially in the tropics where the daily average humidity is over 70 to 80 percent -- rain on the island of Singapore pours down without notice. One second it was clear, the next the clouds turned into rain.
That was the first day of the school holidays, and my mother brought me to the beach to have a picnic. I had been looking forward to it for a long time and had stored up a lot of snacks, desserts, and drinks for more than a month to prepare for this day. We chose a cloudy day to go, as we thought it would be cooler than sitting under the scorching sun, under the premise that it did not rain. But it did. When we first drove to the beach, there were a lot of people walking around or settling in groups of 3-10. I was a bit uncomfortable with how crowded it was. Fortunately, there was an empty spot under a big tree that was hiding deeply in the forest.
My mother was a little uncomfortable with the place because it was some distance from the sea and next to it was a noisy restaurant. But I had no objection to this, and even thought that the moderate noise brought out the natural world in a more tranquil way. I laid the mat out and sprayed insect repellent around the area. I blamed the person who bought the mat in my mind. They actually chose fluorescent yellow for a picnic mat, as though they were trying to attract bugs. The two of us opened the boxes one by one and placed the lid upside down over the food. The bright colours of the food were obscured, making it less inviting.
We were just packing up, sitting on the grass and talking, when suddenly, I felt something cold on my forehead. I touched it with my hand. It was a drop of water. It might be the dew from the leaves in the morning, I thought, and did not mind it. A few seconds later, however, I was hit by a heavy drop of water, again. I grumbled to my mother, "This place is really damp." My mother seemed to feel it too and nodded gently. But just as we were about to take out the apple slices, we suddenly saw people on the beach starting to gather up their things and hurrying towards the restaurant and the summerhouse. We knew immediately that something was wrong. I looked up at the treetops, my fingertips resting on the ground that was getting wetter. Mother quickly closed the boxes and stuffed them into her bag.
The last thing we wanted for a picnic was rain.
Within half a minute, as we stepped into the shadows under the restaurant's eaves, the rain fell like the Pacific Ocean was falling from the sky, pounding the tiled roof.
The thunder sounded like a drum and crushed the joy of those present. From that moment on, I knew, activities like picnics must not be held in severely overcast weather. For a moment of cool to ruin the whole journey, the loss truly outweighed the gain.
