Shanghai Daily enjoys a high popularity among both the old and the young in my hometown.It is actually an English newspaper reporting a wide range of everyday happiness, most of which take place in Shanghai.
The reasons why Shanghai Daily is so popular can be divided into the following three aspects. First of all, all the news is closely related to people's lives such as the changes in fuel prices and the fluctuations of the local stock market. Secondly, its price is relatively lower than that of China Daily, its major competitior, which makes it more accessible to those with a tight budget. Thirdly, its effective promotional methods such as pouring huge amounts of money into advertisements create more potential customers.
However, I am not so keen on Shanghai Daily. In my opinion, the advantages mentioned above don't outweigh its great disadvantages. For example, its particular stress on local news alienates those who want to know more about the outside world. Then, with the shrinking of the price, the quality of contents actually turned inferior. Last but not least, the over-emphasis on market promotion actually diminishes its writing and editing quality, as they fail to get enough attention. That's why I don't subscribe to Shanghai Daily.
