整理来自公众号 '外刊精读笔记'

  • outrage:
    - n. 在外刊中经常使用,用来形容公众对一个新闻或者事件反应,一般是anger的反应。它会搭配一些动词使用,经常用这些:be greeted with(做出...的反应), cause, generate, provoke, spark outrage等,比如,The decision provoked outrage from women and human rights groups.这一决定激起了妇女和人权组织的强烈愤慨。
    - vt. outrage这个词在外刊中经常使用,用来形容公众对一个新闻或者事件反应,一般是anger的反应。它会搭配一些动词使用,经常用这些:be greeted with(做出...的反应), cause, generate, provoke, spark outrage等,比如,The decision provoked outrage from women and human rights groups.这一决定激起了妇女和人权组织的强烈愤慨。
    - be outraged at. Scientists and environmentalists are outraged at such belligerence.
    - outrageous. very shocking and unacceptable骇人的;无法容忍的,看一个雪人中的例子:But AI is bound to bring privacy violations that are seen as outrageous.但人工智能必然会带来让人们无法容忍的侵犯隐私行为。

  • deflect:
    - to succeed in preventing sth from being directed towards you 转移;引开。经常的搭配是deflect attention from, 或者deflect criticism from,比如,All attempts to deflect attention from his private life have failed.本想转移人们对他私生活的注意,但一切努力都失败了。
    - syn. divert divert...(away) from...,比如,The crime crackdown is an attempt to divert attention from social problems.此次打击犯罪是为了把人们的注意力从社会问题上转移开。

  • fuel bigtory 助长偏见

  • label (熟词僻义)
    - to describe sb / sth in a particular way, especially unfairly(尤指不公正地)把…称为。来看经济学人中的这句话,But after a month its chief executive, Ren Zhengfei, admitted that its 2019 revenues would in fact be about $30bn lower as a result of the export ban—a 30% drop since 2018. Huawei has labelled Mr Trump’s announcement a U-turn.但一个月后,该公司首席执行官任正非承认,由于出口禁令,该公司2019年的收入实际上将减少约300亿美元——自2018年以来减少了30%。华为称特朗普的声明是一个180度大转弯。

  • come as 表示结果
    - Her death came as a terrible shock to us.她的死使我们极为震惊。&His resignation came as no surprise.他的辞职毫不令人惊讶。

  • double down 加倍做某事
    - redouble 增强 syn.intensify, strengthen, beef up
    - redouble the efforts

  • rebuke
    - to speak severely to sb because they have done sth wrong指责;非难;谴责,相当于scold, castigate。这类表示批评、表扬的词,比如很熟悉的praise,criticize等,结构都是rebuke/praise/criticise sb/sth for sth/doing sth。
    - cast blame on
    - 关于cast的短语:cast a pall over 给...蒙上阴影;cast a shadow over 给...蒙上阴影;cast a judgement on 对...做出判断;cast...as 把...描写成...;cast off the chains 摆脱枷锁

  • trypophobia 密集恐惧症

  • scheme与plan。
    - scheme比plan更强调计划的通盘筹划和某些细节的精心安排。在现代英语中,常用于指阴谋诡计。

  • be doomed to(注定要失败的)可以归到[失败]一类表达中,然后还有:get nowhere(一般是经过长时间的努力后仍然失败),for nothing(所有的工作、准备等白费了),in vain,go (badly) wrong(开始很好,到后来却失败了),not make it,fruitless,flop/be a flop等等,语义之间会有一些差别,不确定的话一定要查字典。

  • struck a new, more urgent tone中strike和tone经常搭配在一起使用。所以比如表示不服,使用了挑衅的口吻,strike a defiant tone;发出了友好的声音,strike a friendly tone等。

  • grapple with 很常见,具体意思是to try hard to find a solution to a problem努力设法解决,比如,The new government has yet to grapple with the problem of air pollution. 新政府还需尽力解决空气污染问题。 基本上等于deal with, tackle等表示[解决]的词。再记一个类似的常用表达get to grips with sth,表示to begin to understand and deal with sth difficult,有时候会翻译为“掌握”。

  • categorically in such a sure and certain way that there is no doubt确定无疑地,断然地,明确地,比如,He has categorically denied his guilt all along.他始终断然否认自己有罪。&Can you state categorically that her death was caused by lack of food?你敢肯定地说她的死是由于缺乏食物造成的吗 ?
