语言是文化的载体，我们来分享一下最近发生的关于语言误解所发生的新闻，中美用词差异。
“that”和“那个”的事件，是加州大学商学院一位教授在online teaching 的时候引用的英文及中文，导致丢了工作的事情。

It is just crazy. A professor at University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business has been put on leave.

While they investigate whether or not he said a bad word, A Chinese word. and he is talking about how to speak more eloquently when we communicate. And to do that.
“ We need to get rid of these filler words.”um”er.like”
In his online class,(because of coronavirus), he decided to use the Chinese language. But some of the students thought he said a very bad English word. Now, the N-WORD is something I’m never going to say in public. It’s deep , dark meaning. It kind of sounds like the most commonly used word in Chinese. Anyway, you can probably guess a bunch of students got offended. Here I found a picture about that professor and cite his original talks. you can judge for yourself.
“A pause between ideas can help bring the audience in. if you have a lot of um of er, so based on your native language, like in china the common word is that. So in china might be neige neige neige”. So there’s different words that you’ll hear in different countries, it’s saying that , that, that.”
The professor’s name was Dr. Greg Patton.
And he was immediately put on leave and kicked off the course. And now there’s a new teacher teaching it.
Geoffrey Garrett,said”it’s simply unacceptable for the faculty to use words in class that can marginalize, hurt and harm the psychological safety of our students.”
It’s unacceptable to use Chinese words in context to demonstrate a point at a business school. in response to a bunch of students who wrote a letter to the dean and see what they said :
It’s a bit long, so I’ll just give you the highlights. “It is with heavy hearts that we write this letter only four days into our USC Marshall MBA program journey as we are very displeased with Dr. Greg Patton.”
He made use of the Chinese word “neige”,and pronounced it the N-word.while using the word as an illustration. The word is most commonly used with a pause between both syllables. Pause. Some of students studied in china and have taken Chinese language course at several colleges, these students have lived in china and studied Chinese. They know exactly what this word means and how it’s used in the Chinese language. It’s identified as a phonetic homonym and a racial derogatory term. And should be carefully used. Especially in the context of speaking Chinese within the social context of the united states. Basically telling everyone you need to adapt the Chinese language. To fit the social context of the United states.
“We are in disbelief that he can teach us communication and be unaware of the power of his words, our mental health has been affected. It is an uneasy feeling allowing him to have the power over our grades, he decides the grades according to your work. That’s how it is. We would rather not take his course than to endure the emotional exhaustion of carrying on with an instructor that disragards cultural diversity and sensitives.
‘In light of the murders of George Floyd, and Breonna Taylor, we cannot let this stand. “
The dean of the university responded.what he has to say?
he talk about the incident “understandably” this caused great pain and unset among students. And for that, I’m deeply sorry, We must and will do better. I’m deeply saddened by this disturbing episode. What happened cannot be undone.’

One group called the Black China Caucus said this: is a common pronoun, but USC’s reaction cheapens and degrades substantive conversations surrounding real challenges on college campuses.
Another group is trying to get a petition signed to reinstate Dr Patton as the teacher of that class. So far they have over fifteen thousand signatures another group of students wrote a letter to the dean.
“we are deeply disappointed that the spurious charge has the additional feature of casting insult toward the Chinese language, the most spoken in the world, and characterized it and its usage as vile, we feel Marshall should be open to diversity in all areas. We further suggest that any attempt to degrade this matter on offensive US term would be naïve. ”
网友B：还有个词“我们”和英语“women”很像，你当着外国人说我们，别人会觉得你很轻佻，耍流氓一样，以前大学英语老师说的他的留学经历。
网友C：老美也会上纲上线的。
网友D：有毛病吧!那英文的what's up也不许说，中文听起来像“我＊”，太粗鲁低俗，侮辱性词语。法语的bonjour也不能说，听起来像“母猪”，Salut也不能说，听起来像"傻驴”。
南加大官网显示，当事教授巴顿是该校马歇尔商学院传播专业的教授，是沟通、人际关系和领导力方面的专家 ，曾获得众多教学奖项，被该校评为最优秀的教师之一，还助力马歇尔学院在沟通和领导力发展方面蝉联相关排名的世界第一。简介中称，巴顿拥有丰富的国际工作经验，曾在环太平洋地区的多个国家参加演讲活动，开展领导力培训项目，并在20多个国家和国际组织中担任过领导职务。
但这一次，他丰富的教学经验和语言积累却为他带来了麻烦。
当年，这就是一张梗图而已。
没想到，最近，真有人因为在美国说了“那个”而遭到围攻…
事件的主角是南加州大学的教授Greg Patton。
8月20日，Patton给MBA的学生们上一门叫“商业沟通”的课程。
因为疫情，当时课程还是远程通过网络进行的。
中间，他提到，在演讲时，在不同主题之间适度停顿，能让听众更专注，不要用太多"um" 或 “er”之类的填补词。
“在不同文化环境中，用的填补词也不一样，比如在中国，很常见的填补词是’那个’，’that that that’，用中文就是’那个，那个，那个’。你在不同的国家会听到不同的填补词。”
这一说，班上的黑人学生都炸了…
在他们听来，教授这是当着全班的面，连说了好几次种族歧视用语nigger“黑鬼”。
而且，这教授的发音不是na ge，而是‘nèi ge, nèi ge, nèi ge。
他们不能忍！
于是，这些黑人学生立马起草一封邮件发给学院的管理层。
在邮件中，他们详细描述了此次事件，并且认为教授有故意之嫌。
他们表示，在事情发生之后，他们很生气，去询问了来自中国的同学“那个”的正确发音，中国同学表示应该是na ge，为什么这个教授发音成nèi ge？
第二，他们表示，他们中也有人在中国学习过中文，在学到这个词之前，老师都会标注，“那个”在特定文化环境中，可能会被听成种族歧视用语，要当心。这个教授不知道？
第三，他们发现，这个教授在说“那个”之前，故意暂停网课录制，等说完后，又重新按下录制按键。“所以，他肯定是知道这个词是有争议的，但他还是说了，而且故意不让这个词被系统录下来。”
学生们表示，因为这件事，自己的精神健康受到严重影响。
“学校一定要严肃处理此事。
让Patton有权力控制我们的分数是件非常不安的事。
我们宁愿不参加这个课程，也不想再继续忍受这种情感折磨，这名教授无视文化多样性，没有的文化敏感性，给黑人学生创造了一个很不受欢迎的学习环境。”
这事闹很大， 后来，涉事教授，以及商学院院长都回应了。
在8月26日一封信中，涉事教授Patton表示，自己并不是故意发错音，但还是为自己给学生造成的不舒服，再次深深致歉。
“虽然我不曾使用任何种族歧视性语言，那个词也完全是中文的发音，虽然我对每个学生都是100%正面积极看待，但我认识到，自己应该做的更好，我会继续学生，和我的学生共同成长，以求创造一个更完美的学习环境。”
总结一下教授的意思就是，我没错，但让你们不舒服了，我道歉。
不过，在院长的信中，他认为这问题真的很严重啊！
8月24日，商学院院长Geoff Garrett在给学生的内部信中承认，这次事件给一些学生造成了严重的伤害和痛苦，
“老师在课上使用这些可能会排斥，伤害我们学生心理的语言是完全不可接受的。
我们一定要做的更好…
我对这一令人不安的事件造成的痛苦和创伤深感悲哀。
虽然事情已经发生，无法撤回，
但请大家放心，副院长Sharoni、Suh-Pyng，我，以及商学院全体教职工会全力支持你们每一个人。”
总结一下就是：道歉，忏悔，下决心要痛改前非…
而这，还不够。
学校表示，他们会对这件事进行彻查，在事情了解清楚之前，要求涉事教授先暂时休假。他教授的商业沟通课程，接下来会交给其他老师接手。
对于学校的要求，这名教授也接受了。
所以，一个教了10年这门课的教授，就因为在课上说了个“那个”，就这么被暂时停职了…
这事被各大媒体报道后，很多网友都表示无法理解。
在reddit上，一名叫SneakieSneakers的网友说：“作为一个会讲中文，并经常在公共场合跟人聊天的人，我经常脱口而出’那个’而且说的很大声。这个词确实听起来很像骂人的话。”
“我知道这个词汇引起误会，所以一般会避免用它。但这就是个填补词，真的有时候就会脱口而出。
如果是正常使用这个词的人，就算是在美国，我认为也不应该让它变成一个’禁词’…”
“这就是一堂关于沟通的学术课程，表达了在不同文化中的语言运用，我真的不懂为啥这些黑人学生明明有那么多需要关注的问题，偏偏要在这事上找茬。”
另一个叫henhen616的用户说：“作为中国人，这事我感觉莫名其妙，有些学生也太柔弱了，总是在那扮演受害者。美国这种受害者的心理真的让人厌恶，这已经让我的态度/政治倾向都改变了。”
另一名叫kylemullaney的网友回复说：“完全同意，如果这都受不了，那你还是别读国际商务了，我之前在中国台湾生活11年，几乎每个星期走在路上，都会有陌生路人好心提醒我为了健康，减减肥。
美国人听来这是极度冒犯的话，但这些人其实只是好心罢了。”
当然，学校也不是所有人都支持让Patton暂时停职的决定。
不少学生支持他，而且还在请愿网站发起要求恢复他工作的请愿。
目前已经有3314人签名支持。

曼哈顿论坛上还有高质量的模考系统，但是需要收取费用。据说外国网友普遍认为该模考与实战的分数差距在正负40分以内，数学偏难，Verbal题目最接近实战，被认为是价值仅次于官方Prep的模考。

Poets & Quants也是GMAT备考过程中具有权威性的资讯网站之一，尤其以商科和MBA的资讯为主。
在这个网站里，可以找到很多接受GMAT成绩的商学院信息，除全球认证的U.S. NEWS、TIMES排名外，网站也曾自己分析过商学院的排名以供大家参考。除此之外，同样含有GMAT的最新动态、商学院的平均GMAT成绩以及考生分享等信息。
其实除了这些主要的参考网站外，还有很多辅助类的参考网站，如可汗学院、经济学人和TED等。

哈佛大学陈曾熙公共卫生学院（ Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health），罗伯特伍德约翰逊基金会（Robert Wood Johnson Foundation）、今年7月1日至8月3日期间对纽约、洛杉矶、芝加哥、休斯顿这全美四大城市的居民进行了家庭财务问题问卷调查，约3400户家庭回答了问卷。在新冠疫情之下，芝加哥的拉丁裔、非裔遭受着双重打击：其一，黑人、拉丁裔族群更容易感染新冠病毒，而且死亡率非常高。其二，黑人、拉丁裔家庭没有足够的财政支援以帮助他们挺过疫情下的经济危机。
家庭没有高速上网服务或无法通过互联网远程上班或者上网课。
在全美四大城市中，休斯顿市的问题最严重，该市63%的家庭面临严重财政危机，洛杉矶市56%，纽约市53%，芝加哥50%的家庭面临财政危机的家庭。
