    Chapter2

I poondered deeply, then, over the adventure of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded making my first drawing. My drawing Number one.It looked like this:

I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups,and asked them wether the drawing frightened them.

But they answered:"Frighten? Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?"

My drawing was not a picture of a hat.It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it,I made another drawing: I drew the inside of the boa constrictor ,so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things exaplained. My drawing Number Two looked like this:

The grown-ups' response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of boa constrictors.Whether from the inside or the outside, and devoted myself instead to geography ,history, arithmetic and grammar. That is why,at the age of six,I gave up what have been a magnificent career as a painter.I have been disheartened by failure of my drawing Number One and my drawing Number two.Grown-ups never understanding anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for chirldren to be always and forever explaining things to them.

I poondered*[pɔndə]v.仔细考虑;沉思* deeply, then, over the adventures*[ədventʃə]n.冒险;奇遇* of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded making my first drawing. My drawing Number one.It looked like this:

I showed my masterpiece*[ma:stəpi:s]n.杰作* to the grown-ups,and asked them wether the drawing frightened them.

But they answered:"Frighten? Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?"

My drawing was not a picture of a hat.It was a picture of a boa constrictor  digesting*[daidʒest]v. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it,I made another drawing: I drew the inside of the boa constrictor ,so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things exaplained. My drawing Number Two looked like this:

The grows-ups' response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside*搁置* my drawings of boa constrictors.whether from the inside or the outside, and devoted*[divəut]v.致力于;奉献* myself instead to geography *[dʒiɔgrəfi]n.地理学*,history, arithmetic*[əriθmətik]n,算术;算法* and grammar. That is why,at the age of six,I gave up what have been a magnificent career as a painter.I have been disheartened *[dis'ha:tən]v.使沮丧;使泄气* by failure of my drawing Number One and my drawing Number two.Grown-ups never understanding anything by themselves, and it is tiresome*[taiəsəm]a.烦人的;使人厌倦的* for chirldren to be always and forever explaining things to them.
