China's leaders ignore the most important Communist anniversary. 50 years since the secret politburo circular known as "the 16th Notification ".

Millions died and many of taday's leaders are victims as well. The party and government were  incapacitated during the decade of mayhem and hysteria that Mao unleashed upon China.

It is the watershed in China and its failure contributed to the possibility of the subsequent reform and openging up.

Mao's crimes can't be investigated without risking debate about the legitimacy of the Communist party.

The leftists partly celebrate Maoism. A few memoirs are published. But historians and officials preserve a code of silence.

The Cultural Revolution can not be commemorated, nor discussed, nor forgotten.
