    1.they think we are religious Bible thumpers他们认为我们是 狂热的宗教信徒

           bible thumper 圣经的狂热者,翻译成狂热的信徒=enthusiastic exponent

    2.that we're backwards and hickish,and stupid

            我们是落后 愚蠢的乡巴佬

            hick=like a hick,说某人像一个hick,意思是他没受过教育,落后

    3.they think that we all have Confederate flags in our yards

        confederate:同盟的,同盟

        南方联盟的旗帜  Confederate flag(美国)

    4.that we're racist and sexist and uneducated

            种族主义者  racist 

            性别歧视者  sexist

    5.they think we're barefoot and pregnant ,with dirt driveways

                driveways:车道  

            barefoot 赤脚的

    他们认为我们这里马路尘土飞扬,经常能看到赤脚和怀孕的人

    6.And  they think we're all prissy butts and that we walk around in hoop skirts with cotton fields in the background

    穿着铁箍裙在棉花田里四处走动

    说我们是乡巴佬

    hoop :铁箍,铁环

    prissy 神经质的

    butt 笑柄,香烟屁股末端

    And then we asked that same question of the Californians

    what do you think the Alabamians think about you?

    that we're crazy,liberal Californians 我们是疯狂的,自由的加州人

    that we're not patriotic

    我们不爱国

    we're snobby and we're elitist

    snobby骄傲的,趾高气扬的

    elitist 趾高气扬的人,或者精英

    we're godless and we're permissive with our children

    我们不信神,我们对孩子放任自由

    permissive 自由的,宽容的,许可的

    that we're elitist ,pie-in-the-sky intellectuals ,rich people,whole foods-eating,very out of touch

    我们是精英主义者,空想家,全食主义者,非常脱节

    1.so by asking questions like this at the start of every conversation

    2. and by identifying and sharing stereotypes

    通过识别和分享刻板印象

    identifying 

    stereotype

    3.we find that people --people on all sides begin to see the simplistic and

    4.often  mean-spirited caricatures  they carry

    我们发现两边的人开始审视自己带有的关于别人的,过于简单的、经常是自私的印象

        simplistic=oversimplified

    mean-spirited=selfish

    caricature=夸大的描述

    5.and in that --after that ,we can move into a process of genuine conversation

    开始了真正的对话

    genuine conversation

    genuine=real, =authentic

    we've gone on to host dialogues and partnerships with media organizations across the country

    我们已经和全国各地的媒体组织开展对话,开展合作

    and they've been about some of our most contentious issues:

    一直讨论着最有争议的话题

    guns ,immigrations, race, education

    种族和教育

    contentious=argumentative

    1.and what we found ,remarkably, is that real dialogue is in fact possible

    很明显 remarkably(差点写错,再写一遍  remarkably)

    2.and that when given a chance and structure around doing so,

    当有机会而且和这样的组织结构去做的时候

    3.many ,not all, but  many of our fellow citizens are eager to engage with the other 很多市民愿意和他们相处
