In 1858, a French engineer, Aime Thome de Gamond, suggested that a twenty-one-
-mile mile tunnel with a platform be built under the English Channel. He said if tall
chimney were built above the sea level, this tunnel would be well-ventilated. In 1860,
an Englishman, William Low, put forward a better plan that a double railway tunnel
should be built. This would solve the problem of ventilation for if a train entered the
tunnel, it would draw in fresh air behind it. At that time, the British feared that it would
be possible for others to invade Britain if the tunnel were connected. It was not until on March 7, 1994 that the Channel Tunnel was officially opened.
