1.acquaint

The Broadcasting Museum also offers Saturday workshops to acquaint children with the world of radio.   广播博物馆还举办周六讲习班让孩子了解无线电世界。

You need to acquaint the police with the facts.  你得把事实真相告诉警方。

I want to acquaint myself with your strengths and weaknesses.我想知道你有哪些长处以及不足。

Take time to acquaint yourself with the rules.   花点时间熟悉一下规则。

I need to acquaint myself with the new regulations.  我得熟悉一下新的规章制度。

*acquaint sb with后面只能跟sth，不能跟人，跟人要看下面的这句：

I'd like to make you acquainted with my brother. 我愿让您认识一下我哥哥。

I was then totally unacquainted with his poems.当时我根本不知道他的诗。

I am not personally acquainted with the gentleman in question.   我本人和所说的这位先生并不相识。UK US  formal

We would like to get better acquainted.  我们希望加深对彼此的认识。

She was well acquainted with classical literature.  她对古典文学很熟悉。

2.acquaintance

He has a wide circle of acquaintances. 他的交游很广。

They were nothing more than casual acquaintances. 他们只是萍水相逢而已。

She will never be more than a casual acquaintance.  她从来就只是个泛泛之交。

She has only a nodding acquaintance with the issues involved.  她对相关问题只是略知一二。

By a lucky chance it excited attention, and various persons sought my acquaintance.由于

偶然的因缘这本书引起了人们的注意，不少人想要同我结识。

On closer acquaintance, I found her quite easy to get along with. 经过进一步熟悉，我就发现她很好相处。

3.across

If you look across at a place, person, or thing, you look towards them.

I sat next to Lori, and Peter and Anne sat across from us. 我坐在洛里旁边，彼得和安娜坐在我们对面。

The supermarket is just across from the theater. 超市就在剧院对面。（英国英语则更习惯用介词opposite 来代替across from。）

They're already across. 他们已经到了对面那一边了。

The parking garage is just across the bridge on the left. 停车库就在桥那头左边。

He hit him across the face.他打了他的脸。

Their rooms are across the hall. 他们两人的房间中间隔着大厅。

我的理解：简单讲，across有动态静态的含义，我们平时只掌握了动态的一方面。一个具体的动作+across，通常做动态的副词理解：穿过。比如walk across。但be across这样又是表示静态的：it's 30 cm across.（它的直径为30cm）。///作为介词呢，感觉要看跟的名词是什么：是一片东西，还是一条东西……

4.laden with

He always comes back from France laden with presents for everyone.   他从法国回来总是给大家带很多礼物。

The table, as always, was laden with food.   与以往一样，桌子上摆满了食物。

The following summer the peach tree was laden with fruit...第二年夏天桃树就结满了桃子。

She was laden with doubts about the affair.  她心中对此事充满了疑问。

5.pardon

'Would you get undressed, please?' — 'I beg your pardon?' — 'Will you get undressed?'“请你脱掉衣服，好吗？”——“你说什么？”——“脱掉衣服，好吗？”

I was impolite and I do beg your pardon...我失礼了，真对不起。

He was granted a presidential pardon.他得到了总统的赦免。

After the revolution all political prisoners were pardoned. | 革命后所有的政治犯都被赦免。

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a 'duplex'?   请原谅我无知,duplex 是什么呢？

The place was, if you'll pardon the expression, a dump.  那个地方,请恕我直言,简直是个垃圾场。
