Being the only one.

Today I am going to bring you a story about Ursula Burns who’s the first African American CEO of Fortune 500 company.

She was born and grew up in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, there’s a fairly consistent lifestyle that they all lived — they were poor. Her mother struggled a lot to make it okey for them. She ended up becoming an engineer by accident, she went to engineering school and it’s very very normal to be the only.

There are a couple of things that we will never change, and one of the things that she would never give up is her hair. In the early part of her career, she was definitely one of the very very few women and she was the only black woman. Therefore you will know why she said being the only is the normal thing above. People can’t change their colors, hairs and parents, but they still have the opportunity to be the changer to their lives.

Ursula said that she encouraged women particularly women trying to get into the STEM( Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) all the time. She guaranteed them that they would be the minority in the room and instead of being a burden, it should be an opportunity to distinguish themselves.

So, if you were put into a strange environment, maybe you are the only one who own something special, never make it as a burden, try to make it as your unique signature . Whenever they think of something they remember you, then you could be the irreplaceable. And that’s the beginning of you value expanding.

Being the only one wouldn’t be a bad thing, it should be a window for you to conquer the world.
