Under the background of the globalization and the increase of the inter-cultural communication, a large number of western culture phenomena can be seen in China, among which there is the popularity of the western festivals like Christmas,April Fool’s Days and Valentine’s Day and so on. The staunch lovers of these festivals are young people such as the high school and college students
Attitudes toward the Western festivals are among the general public. Some people say that we should keep away from them and just leave them there. Other people contend that we need to be open-minded to the foreign festivals and learn some Western culture from them. As for me, we should value our traditional festivals, which have been an integral part of the Chinese culture, and meanwhile, we can have a taste of the Western festivals just for fun. There are several reasons.
On the one hand, an outstanding nation should show its sincerity to contain other cultures. When you turn over the Chinese long history, you’re sure to be absorbed in the amusing fact that the people from the Tang Dynasty accepted the Christmas with pleasure and even many emperors took the lead to celebrate it. China, homing to a population of more than 1.3 billion, is a country embracing kinds of new things. The more we share with people of other countries, the more we touch in heart with each other. While we are lighting out the Christmas Tree all over the continental, the other part of the Pacific Ocean has organized the China Spring Festival for many times. Many of the foreigners put on the Tang suit, hold the traditional Chinese red lanterns, Chinese knot hanging around the world. Actually, those people of insight from the western countries will give a plum in return for a peach that acquire a taste for Chinese festival and its culture.
On the other hand, to facing with “tsunami” of those western festivals, we should preserve our traditional festivals with more stories and mascots. The Western festivals spread their value with some fairy tales. We should also do something like that combining the observing ways of our traditional festivals. Take the Chinese Spring Festival as an example, setting firecrackers was an effective way for the ancient people to guard against the tigers and wolfs and expelled the demons and ghosts but these days the festival has become a joyful symbol for the Chinese people. Now and then the social conditions being changed, the festivals remain the shadow of the old habits and customs. Now that many habits and customs have been passed over the present and accepted by the people, it doesn’t mean the festivals are invariable.
Above all, it’s not a bad thing for the people to take advantage of the western festivals, entertaining themselves, getting together and exchanging greetings. But while we are learning the western festivals, we should know more about our traditional festivals and respect them and cherish them.
