Recently in the 21st century, more and more often, millionaires are made. And more and more often these people donate their hard earned cash to charities around the globe. This act of generosity is called philanthropy. As by Google definition a philanthropist is a person who…
‘seeks to promote the welfare of others, especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.’
Philanthropists of all ages and capabilities donate things of all different types and ways, though the most common donation item is money. You may want to be a philanthropist, well, you can! The act of philanthropy isn’t just donating massive amounts of money. It’s also the act of kindness for the people who are less fortunate than us. Donating your unused clothing and toys are all acts of philanthropy. But one of the most important points people sometimes forget is that philanthropists don’t expect anything in return for their good deeds.
One example of philanthropy in the world is, billionaires donating their money. Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Warren Buffett, Michael Bloomberg and Mark Zuckerberg. These people donate massive amounts of money every year. In fact, these specific people are in a organisation called The Giving Pledge. Warren Buffett and Bill Gates founded this company in 2010 and it encourages the members to donate half of their profits to charity.
Every year The Giving Pledge donates more than 50 billion dollars to charitable organisations in the world.
Another example more close to home (New Zealand), is Mark Dunajtschik. Mark is worth over 100 million dollars and works as a property investor. He recently donated 50 million dollars to build a children's hospital in Wellington.
As you can see, philanthropy is not just donating massive amounts of money. It’s mainly how willing you are to help the people who are less fortunate than you. This willingness and compassion is the true definition of philanthropy. Making our world a better place, as they say.
