2019年1月3日10时26分，“嫦娥四号”探测器成功在月球背面着陆，并通过“鹊桥”中继星传回了世界第一张近距离拍摄的月背影像图。此次任务实现了人类探测器首次月背软着陆、首次月背与地球的中继通信，标志着中国成为第一个登陆月球背面的国家。
由于月球背面的地形阻碍，光声电和图片信息很难传送到地球。为解决这个难题，中国今年5月发射了一颗鹊桥卫星到“光环轨道”上，让鹊桥卫星在月球背后6.5万千米之外的Halo轨道簇上运行。通过它的中转，月球背面的信息可以传递到地球。
1959年前苏联“月球3号”传回了第一张月球背面图片，1966年“月球9号”成为人类第一个成功软着陆在月表的探测器，1969年美国宇航员尼尔·奥尔登·阿姆斯特朗踏上月球表面。此次中国“嫦娥四号”成为人类第一个着陆月球背面的探测器，中国与前苏联、美国有了并列第一的荣誉。
