研之字形，金石为开，本意是碾磨。

研者练也，就是遁入法则的丛林，细细练习。研字没有上古的字形，《汉典》网站只追溯至秦时的小篆字体。

穷数之极而为专长。

究，穷，极，三字音义相近，都有深邃、竟了的意思。
