chap 14 宪问

    这一篇最长,有47篇,不过总的说来,辜鸿铭的翻译有点怪。有时候意思很不是原来的味道。尤其他不太愿意涉及春秋时候的具体人与事。

    14.1 邦有道,谷;邦无道,谷;耻也

    【辜鸿铭】when there is justice and order in the government of country, to think only of  pay, is dishonorable,  when there is not justice and order in the government of country, to think only of pay, is also dishonorable.

    When good government prevails in a state, to be thinking only of salary; and, when bad government prevails, to be thinking, in the same way, only of salary;-- this is shameful."

    14.4 邦有道,危言危行;邦无道,危行言孙;

    When good government prevails in a state, language may be lofty and bold, and actions the same. When bad government prevails, the actions may be lofty and bold, but the language may be with some reserve."

    14.2 克伐怨欲,不行焉,可以为仁?可以为难

    14.5 有德者必有言,有言者不必有德;仁者必有勇,勇者不必有仁;

    【辜鸿铭】A man who possessed moral worth will always have something to say worth listening to; but a man who has something to say is  not necessarily a man of moral worth.

    The virtuous will be sure to speak correctly, but those whose speech is good may not always be virtuous.

    14.7 君子而不仁者有矣夫,未有小人而仁者

    Superior men, and yet not always virtuous, there have been, alas! But there never has been a mean man, and, at the same time, virtuous.

    【辜鸿铭】There  are wise men who are not moral characters; but a fool is never a moral character.

    14.23 事君,勿欺也,而犯之

    14.30 君子道者三,仁者不忧,知者不惑,勇者不惧

    14.33 不逆诈,不亿不信,抑亦先觉者,是贤乎!

    14.36 以直报怨,以德报德

    requite injury with justice and kindness with kindness

    14.37 不怨天不尤人,下学而上达,知我者其天乎!

    do not repine against the God, nor the men;

    14.39 贤者辟世,其次辟地,其次辟色,其次辟言

    retire from

    14.40 是知其不可而为之者与?

    who knows the impracticalness of the times, and is yet to try do something

    14.45 君子,修己以敬;修己以安人;修己以安百姓

    set himself seriously to order his conversations aright.

    he wants to order his conversation aright for the happiness of others/of worlds

    14.44 上好礼,则民易使也

    when the rulers encourage the education and good manner, the people  are easily amenable to government.
