Walter Whitman is a poetry which born in 19 century America. He was a typical humanist. What he preferred was a generals human polity, that he hope it can work on human heart and body.
He had written lots of poems. The one I like is “O captain, dear captain”. In this poem, He expresses the tragedy of war and pity for people. He likened the country to a captain and father. At first he was happy for victory, but the victory took away the captain’s life, make him painful death in the end. He was sad, but his heart never felt numb. He can’t take this result.
The truth is, he once attend the war of America civil war, and his brother was hurt in it. He got to the hospital every day, to feel the pain and suffering that came from people. He cure the wounded soldier and give them gift.
Also we can see that this poem doesn’t have any rhythm and complex forms. It only has sentence-initial rhythm. Yes, he doesn't want to be limited by traditional formats, he just wants to express his emotions. That impress me a lot.
