I’m sick and tired of hearing people say things like: “Life isn’t just about being productive and time-efficient. I would rather enjoy my life than try to optimize everything.”
Let’s discuss what productivity, efficiency, time management, and all that jazz are really about. To give you the answer upfront: it’s about REDUCING the amount of time you have to spend working to get the same result, allowing you to allocate that extra time how you want to. And YOU can decide if that means more relaxation and recreation, or more focused work to get ahead in your life.
I feel like a lot of people think that being efficient with your time means sacrificing everything else to work 24/7. But that’s not the case at all. When you develop your focus skill and manage your time and energy better, you’ll get the same amount of work done in less time.
Now, doing things you love is NOT a waste of time. But procrastinating, not being able to focus, constantly switching tasks, and being miserable while doing so are a waste.
You want to either get shit done or enjoy the time doing something you love. And you’ll get there by cutting out the time where you DON’T get anything done while being MISERABLE at the same time.
Sitting at your desk and killing time because you are done with your tasks, but can’t leave the office yet. Procrastinating on important work by mindlessly scrolling on your phone. Staring at a blank document for an hour, not being able to get into a state of flow.
These are a WASTE of time. And by not solving this issue, you are SACRIFICING the time you can spend with your family, and friends, pursuing growth and hobbies. And you are sacrificing the time you could use to get ahead in your life and become the person you want to be.
So, let’s be clear. You absolutely want to be EXTREMELY efficient with your time and energy. Cut the slack and waste in between the pockets of deep work. This will free up a ton of time you can put to better use.
