    III.

Among HSYLC's three concentrations - Sciences, Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities - which one are you most interested in concentrating in? What previous experiences do you have in the field (feel free to discuss a project you have worked on, an interesting article or book you analyzed, or your personal story related to it), and what specific topics under this concentration interest you?

My preference is the Social Science while the other two concentrations are also good for me, as they are all closely related to some extent.

The most “academic” experience I've had was the HWeek last year. I attended several classes of sociology and economics as well as history and philosophy during this week. Then I discovered the economics lessons were very different from what I am currently taking, though both are very intriguing. Basically, more math calculation is applied in the HWeek classes than the previous one I take. I really look forward to the further study of this subject. Except from that wonderful week, economics was also very compelling to me. The topic I’m most interested in recently is the development economics. Last semester I made a little research on Malaysia online about its poverty. Later I discovered that this country has developed a lot during the past forty years. The extreme poverty dropped from more than a half to about 3 percent. Then my focus switched to how this miracle could happen as more essays were focus on this topic. I noticed that there were a series of policies that were made to address this issue and the positive and negative effects related. The similar thing happened in China as well – the reform and opening-up policy, yet with different effects. For instance, the New Economic Policy brought up discrimination among different ethnic groups (i.e, Chinese, Malays, Indian and the others). The reason is that the policy benefits the Malays more while it limits the room for the local Chinese. (Discrimination is not something new to this nation from the example of Singapore, though.) These are the possible explanations for the current Malaysia situation that the rich are very rich while the poor live in the slums.

I will also go on a trip of field research in April about how microloans can affect people’s life in several rural communities. I’ve just begun the prepare for it. I read a book about the development economics which provides me with more detailed description of the process of escaping from poverty.

To sum up, the process of discovering the hidden reasons and background behind the data is something I really enjoy, and that’s why I want to explore more in the economics this summer.
