1 Diego Maradona (2019)
After Senna (2010) and the Oscar-winning Amy (2015), British director Asif Kapadia completes his hat-trick of riveting biographical film-making with Diego Maradona. The Argentine football superstar’s story is well documented - trophies, "the Hand of God", off pitch scandals and all - but the extreme highs and lows of his Napoli years in the '80s are laid bare here.
2 Fever Pitch (1997)
Nick Hornby's adaptation of his bestselling memoir Fever Pitch: A Fan's Life into a rom-com starring Colin Firth as an English teacher obsessed with Arsenal FC is still a classic of the genre. When his character Paul falls for Sarah, he realises their fluctuating relationship is correlating with the Gunners’ fortunes in the 1988-1989 season. Luckily for them, and the Arsenal fans watching who have never seen their club win the title, the film climaxes with the 2-0 win against Liverpool they need to win the First Division that year.
