Since the advent of rawinsonde observations, thermodynamic diagrams have been used to plot sounding data and to assess atmospheric stability. Despite numerous advancements in technology and forecast techniques, the thermodynamic diagram remains an essential tool for today's weather forecaster. Analysis of soundings has now extended well beyond traditional rawinsonde data to include sounding data observed remotely by satellites or produced by NWP models.
There are several thermodynamic diagrams used for sounding analysis in research and operations in the atmospheric sciences, including the Stüve diagram, the emagram, the tephigram and the skew-T/log-P diagram. This module focuses on the skew-T/log-P, widely used for over 60 years by operational forecasters in the United States Air Force, Navy, and National Weather Service. Much of the material for this module is drawn from the document The Use of the Skew-T/Log-P Diagram in Analysis and Forecasting (1990) of the Air Weather Service, which has been an essential sounding analysis reference manual for operational forecasters through the years.

1. Skew-T Description
This chapter introduces the skew-T/log-P diagram, describes the lines on it, and describes sounding data in general.
2. Parameters
This chapter describes various parameters derived from the skew-T/log-P diagram in these categories: moisture, humidity, temperatures, levels, stability, and shear.
3. Stability
This chapter describes various aspects of stability, including how to determine stability, how stability changes, and other forms of instability.
4. Forecast Applications
This chapter presents several forecast applications using a skew-T/log-P diagram, including those related to boundary layer, convection, winter weather, turbulence, and icing.
Interactive Skew-T
Access the Interactive Skew-T diagram (will open in a separate window). The Interactive Skew-T diagram is a tool which allows you to plot and manipulate sounding data on a skew-T/log-p diagram. It will be used throughout this module to help you answer questions and work through exercises.
