    Fellow toastmasters and welcomed guesses,

I’m glad I have chance to introduce myself to you.

In one recent get-together with my long time no see research group mates at university, I started introducing my status quo by saying I work for EHS, two group mates nearby moved away from me and responded with one voice “EHS is most boring in my company”. One mate is my coworker and the other for 3M.

I’m proud of what I am doing. I wish I could help people realize how important EHS and provide instant feedback in that situation. I am product stewardship specialist for Dow Coating Materials business in Asia pacific region. My job is to ensure DCM product has minimum adverse effect to human health and the environment through its whole life cycle, from R&D innovation to manufacture, transportation, customer use, end product use and final disposal. Prior to that I was a technical information searcher where I searched for literatures like articles and patents for the R&D group. Before that, I was a researcher working in the lab innovating new products for coating business. I joined RohmHaas at 2005, subsequently in 2009, Dow brought RohmHaas and I was merged to Dow. I graduated from Fudan University with master’s degree majored in polymer science. My EHS colleagues joking me as "polymer queen". When I look back my career, what really drives me is I can learn something new every day. My polymer expertise is simply because of years accumulation. I have studied polymer for seven years, then two years making polymer in the lab, 3 years searching polymer and 6 years handling polymer regulation, how could I be not good at it.

But that’s not enough. I want to broaden my skill set which is why I’m here.

The first reason I join toastmaster is I want to learn from you. You are a group of talented, humorous and nice person. In the past I felt stressed and uncomfortable when company with senior person because I was struggling what I should say, how I should respond, did I look silly. Until one day I realized I was so lucky that I could have chance to link to person who has more experience and knowledge than me. Until then I started to appreciate and enjoy the moment whatever I can learn from others.

Second, I want to improve my presentation skill. There is no need to explain the importance of presentation skill in this group. Each of us either practice presentation like what I’m doing right now or watch others doing presentation in every meeting which helps us develop our presentation skill here.

The last but not least, I want to improve my feedback skill and make friends here. The way we give positive and constructive feedback to each other makes me feel we are friends. People love others not for who they are but for how they make them feel. Positive and constructive feedback can not only help others to improve, but also make them feel good. It works like a charm not only at work but also at home, like educating kids. I hope to replace my instant criticism to thoughtful positive and constructive feedback. Even I deliver the same message, the way I deliver could make big difference.

I’m looking forward to learning from you and make friends with you.

If learning could be a hobbit, I wish I could be a life-time learner, stay hungry, stay foolish.

This is the best club I’ve ever joined, if anyone is still a guess here, please don’t hesitate to join the Toastmaster club!

After introducing my career, I’d like to share the top three reasons why I join Toastmaster club. In one of our regular meeting like this when I was a guess sitting there, our president Yu Teng said at the closing there was no guest today. I didn’t correct him but I made up my mind to join the club at that moment. So treat guest as member will make a real member. I’m kidding.

I have been a guess for a while and wondering, now I decide to join the club.

I was sitting there smiling awkwardly and said “EHS has many sub-functions, and I work for product safety.

I am passionate to grow in my current job with project management skill and broad expertise in regulatory, hazard communication, toxicology, risk assessment and industry hygiene areas.

My first experience with Toastmaster went back to 2008, when I visited Spring House in Philadelphia, a previous RohmHaas site. My colleague invited me to join the lunch time Toastmaster meeting. I tried a small prompt speech and colleagues was so nice to give me an award-a “best speaker” banner. That’s my first close contact with the club. Unfortunately I didn’t join the club at that time, otherwise I can stand here saying seven years ago I was so nervous on the stage and I could be confident now.

    Better late than never.

I could only remember there might be five or six person there, and do some prompt speech which require ability to think on your feet. I can’t remember there was any presentation or role taker.

influenced by close association with you
