Despite resistance to change, however, many new ideas do manage totake hold. We might suppose that when they do, those who fought sohard for them would remember the resistance they had to overcome.
Ironically, however, they often forget very quickly. In fact, they some-times display the same fear and insecurity they so deplored in others. Anexample occurred in psychiatry. Sigmund Freud and his followers wereostracized and bitterly attacked for suggesting that sexuality was animportant factor in the development of personality. The hostility towardFreud was so strong, in fact, that his masterwork, The Interpretation ofDreams, was ignored when it was first published in 1900. It took eightyears for six hundred copies of the book to be sold.
