    L47-1:

    Too high a price?

    /tuː/ /haɪ/ /ə/ /praɪs?/

Pollution is the price we pay for an overpopulated, over

    /pəˈluːʃən/ /ɪz/ /ðə/ /praɪs/ /wiː/ /peɪ/ /fɔːr/ /ən/ /ˌəʊvəˈpɒpjʊleɪtɪd,/ /ˈəʊvə/

industrialized planet. When you come to think about it,

    /ɪnˈdʌstrɪəlaɪzd/ /ˈplænɪt./ /wɛn/ /juː/ /kʌm/ /tuː/ /θɪŋk/ /əˈbaʊt/ /ɪt./

there are only four ways you can deal with rubbish: dump it,

    /ðeər/ /ɑːr/ /ˈəʊnli/ /fɔː/ /weɪz/ /juː/ /kæn/ /diːl/ /wɪð/ /ˈrʌbɪʃ:/ /dʌmp/ /ɪt,/

burn it, turn it into something you can use again, attempt to

    /bɜːn/ /ɪt,/ /tɜːn/ /ɪt/ /ˈɪntuː/ /ˈsʌmθɪŋ/ /juː/ /kæn/ /juːz/ /əˈgɛn,/ /əˈtɛmpt/ /tuː/

produce less of it. We keep trying all four methods, but the

    /ˈprɒdjuːs/ /lɛs/ /ɒv/ /ɪt./ /wiː/ /kiːp/ /ˈtraɪɪŋ/ /ɔːl/ /fɔː/ /ˈmɛθədz,/ /bʌt/ /ðiː/

sheer volume of rubbish we produce worldwide threatens to

    /ʃɪə//ˈvɒljʊm/ /ɒv/ /ˈrʌbɪʃ/ /wiː/ /ˈprɒdjuːs/ /ˌwɜːldˈwaɪd/ /ˈθrɛtnz/ /tuː/

    overwhelm us.

    /ˌəʊvəˈwɛlm/ /ʌs./

Rubbish, however, is only part of the problem of polluting

    /ˈrʌbɪʃ,/ /haʊˈɛvə,/ /ɪz/ /ˈəʊnli/ /pɑːt/ /ɒv/ /ðə/ /ˈprɒbləm/ /ɒv/ /pəˈluːtɪŋ/

our planet. The need to produce ever-increasing quantities

    /ˈaʊə/ /ˈplænɪt./ /ðə/ /niːd/ /tuː/ /ˈprɒdjuːs/ /ˈɛvər-ɪnˈkriːsɪŋ/ /ˈkwɒntɪtiz/

of cheap food leads to a different kind of pollution.

    /ɒv/ /ʧiːp/ /fuːd/ /liːdz/ /tuː/ /ə/ /ˈdɪfrənt/ /kaɪnd/ /ɒv/ /pəˈluːʃən./

Industrialized farming methods produce cheap meat

    /ɪnˈdʌstrɪəlaɪzd/ /ˈfɑːmɪŋ/ /ˈmɛθədz/ /ˈprɒdjuːs/ /ʧiːp/ /miːt/

products: beef, pork and chicken. The use of pesticides and

    /ˈprɒdʌkts:/ /biːf,/ /pɔːk/ /ænd/ /ˈʧɪkɪn./ /ðə/ /juːz/ /ɒv//ˈpɛstɪsaɪdz//ænd/

fertilizers produces cheapgrainand vegetables. The price

    /ˈfɜːtɪlaɪzəz/ /ˈprɒdjuːsɪz/ /ʧiːp/ /greɪn/ /ænd/ /ˈvɛʤtəb(ə)lz./ /ðə/ /praɪs/

we pay for cheap food may be already too high: Mad Cow

    /wiː/ /peɪ/ /fɔː/ /ʧiːp/ /fuːd/ /meɪ/ /biː/ /ɔːlˈrɛdi/ /tuː/ /haɪ:/ /mæd/ /kaʊ/

Disease (BSE) incattle, salmonella in chicken and eggs, and

    /dɪˈziːz/ /(biː-ɛs-iː)/ /ɪn//ˈkætl,//salmonella//ɪn/ /ˈʧɪkɪn/ /ænd/ /ɛgz,/ /ænd/

listeriain dairy products. And if you think you'll abandon

    /listeria/ /ɪn/ /ˈdeəri/ /ˈprɒdʌkts./ /ænd/ /ɪf/ /juː/ /θɪŋk/ /juːl/ /əˈbændən/

meat and become a vegetarian, you have the choice of very

    /miːt/ /ænd/ /bɪˈkʌm/ /ə/ /ˌvɛʤɪˈteərɪən,/ /juː/ /hæv/ /ðə/ /ʧɔɪs/ /ɒv/ /ˈvɛri/

expensive organically-grown vegetables or a steady diet of

    /ɪksˈpɛnsɪv/ /ɔːˈgænɪk(ə)li-grəʊn/ /ˈvɛʤtəb(ə)lz/ /ɔːr/ /ə/ /ˈstɛdi/ /ˈdaɪət/ /ɒv/

pesticides every time you think you're eating fresh salads

    /ˈpɛstɪsaɪdz/ /ˈɛvri/ /taɪm/ /juː/ /θɪŋk/ /jʊər/ /ˈiːtɪŋ/ /frɛʃ/ /ˈsælədz/

and vegetables, or just having an innocent glass of

    /ænd/ /ˈvɛʤtəb(ə)lz,/ /ɔː/ /ʤʌst/ /ˈhævɪŋ/ /ən/ /ˈɪnəsənt/ /glɑːs/ /ɒv/

water! However, there is an even more insidious kind of

    /ˈwɔːtə! / /haʊˈɛvə,/ /ðeər/ /ɪz/ /ən/ /ˈiːvən/ /mɔːr//ɪnˈsɪdɪəs/ /kaɪnd/ /ɒv/

pollution that particularly affects urban areas and invades

    /pəˈluːʃən/ /ðæt/ /pəˈtɪkjʊləli/ /əˈfɛkts/ /ˈɜːbən/ /ˈeərɪəz/ /ænd//ɪnˈveɪdz/

our daily lives, and that is noise.

    /ˈaʊə/ /ˈdeɪli/ /lɪvz,/ /ænd/ /ðæt/ /ɪz/ /nɔɪz./
