Q1.Why has Miss Celia been so secretive about what she does in the bedroom upstairs?
Miss Celia hadn’t got a baby for a long time after marriage. So she got herself some tonic drinkings in secret to help her catch the baby. Maybe she just didn’t want others know her embarrassing situation.
Q2.What happens after the dinner at Senator’s house?
Stuart broke up with Skeeter. Actually I don’t remember the exact reason for this bad ending.…Perhaps it was because Skeeter wanted to know more details about Patricia??
Thoughts:
Last week I tasked about Skeeter. So this week I’d like to share my thoughts on Minny and Miss Celia. The development of their relationship is the storyline I really appreciate a lot in this book.
In the earlier chapters, Minny viewed Miss Celia as the worst of all white ladies she had ever tend to. At first I was confused. Though a little stupid, Miss Celia was the only one white lady who was friendly to the black help . Why did Minny dislike her so much? After several chapters, I understood Minny’s feeling since it is weird for a white lady to behave in that intimate way. Miss Celia always tired to be a friend with Minny. But actually in Minny’s view, she is too innocent to understand the deep gap between them. Her kindness is no more false to Minny.
But things change after a series of things: Minny helped Miss Celia with her abortion; Miss Celia fought with the naked man to save Minny. These events , especially the latter one, greatly changed Minny’s view towards Miss Celia. “Is this really happening? Is a white woman really beating up a white man to save me?” Minny was extremely shocked by what Miss Celia had done. She then began to understand that Miss Celia was truly concerned about her as a friend.
And in chapter 26, after Minny told her all the things she had done to Hilly, Miss Celia seemed to change her attitude. She stopped pleasing Hilly and other white ladies. And fought back with the sarcastic nickname: “For Two-Slice Hilly”. It is quite uplifting.
