Holden is fiery like the fire. His erratic emotions will burn himself and others around him. Though I would have a chance, I do not want to be a friend with Holden.
In Chapter 6, Stradlater answered Holden, "That's a professional secret, buddy." Then Holden frighted with Stradlater. Although readers know Jane is important in his heart, Stradlater does not know that. The dirty things Stradlater did with Jane are his assume/imagine. At the same time, this fight also contain the angry that Stradlater tore his writing, denied his working and his negative emotion. Holden is the kind of person easy to put one thing on another thing, sensitive and irritable. In the whole process, he never consider others emotion. It is hard to get along with this kind of people.
In addition, Holden is a dreamer/visionary. "I got excited as hell thinking about it. I really did. I knew the part about pretending I was a deaf-mute was crazy, but I liked thinking about it anyway. But I really decided to go out West and all." He gets a pretty dream and wants to go to the West in Chapter 25. His world in the mind is peaceful and nice. He is easy to fall in his own emotion. He seldom think about the dream how hard to be realize. The dream cannot be realize just is a good fairy tale. And when he tough that side of world. His world has another possibility, two opposite sides. His world outlook seperate. He worried about the dirty words on the wall, what he did disobeyed social conscience. He went to bar and call the prostitute. He wants to do some irregular things which are different from normal. Perhaps, just because it was exactly so: he suffered by the two opposite sides of himself, as if the struggles between evil and justice would never stop. He eagers to escape from the ugly side of world. I do not want to be a friend with coward.
At the same time, it is adverse to both of Holden and me to become a pair of close friends. He wants to suicide to catch others attention in Chapter 14, though he does not. "I felt like jumping out the window. I probably would've done it, too, if I'd been sure somebody'd cover me up as soon as I landed. I didn't want a bunch of stupid rubbernecks looking at me when I was all gory." He knows his death just will be a joke for people, he gives up commit sucide, but the despire in the back does not decrease. He cannot get kindness of this world, cannot accept the world and the world seems either do not accept him. The link between he and the world becomes very weak. He is suffering and lonely, when he faces the other side of reality he never tough, he do not have any experience to deal with them. He is like a man who falls in the water, try his best to grab even a piece of leaf. Although this behavior will not work, it is people's instinct to live. Even the kind people would hurt innocent to help themselves during the time of despair. I know I am the leaf, I am not a bunch of driftwood. Holden for me is dangerous, he cannot be my friend.
Holden wants to be a cather in the rye. I do not know whether he can realize it. I either do not know whether I can realize my dream. I do not wish I become his leaf or he become my leaf. The only thing I could do for him is smilie every time when I meet him.
