Kaltenpoth's team suspected that the beetle Lagria villosa might have a useful strategy. In the 1920s, a German entomologist had described a series of three bacteria-filled pouches running along the back of the beetle at it's larval stage. But until Kaltenpoth and coleagues took a closer look, the bacteria's function and identity were unknown. "We suspected fungal defense", says study co-author Laura, an evolutionary ecologist at the university of Copenhagen, Danmark, "But we wanted to demonstrate this directly."
