Global competency tren

Hi everyone, sorry for not writing for awhile. I just made it back from Egypt and honestly had an eye-opening experience into the Middle East. So to align today’s theme with that, let’s talk about global competency and how students in the future have to face this complex and ever more cross cultural society.

As described by the National Education Agency in the US, global competence refers to the acquisition of in-depth knowledge and understanding of international issues, an appreciation of and ability to learn and work with people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, proficiency in a foreign language and skills to function in a foreign country. In my understanding, having GC is really about whether or not you are able to succeed in your work and life in another country or able to do that with a diverse community in your home country. This means to see if students succeed beyond their academic knowledge but to gain insight into living, negotiating, communicating, understanding the changing society that we live in. The purpose of being globally competent is to gain diverse perspectives that will help you to see beyond your current society and to take a bird’s eye view of the trends of the world, this might help you to become more competitive as you start to spot opportunities that previously don’t exist in your society or others.

It is with this note that the OECD developed the global competency model into PISA (Program for international student assessment) in 2018 as a testament to meet the needs of more complex world problems from global health issues, environmental challenges such as H1N1, natural disasters, energy crisis, etc. The assessment is looking to measure the cognitive skills & knowledge of students ability to interpret global issues and also to test their social skills & attitudes towards different culture in a separate questionnaire with scenarios (see more below). These assessments will play a critical role in the education policy decisions made by countries taking the PISA. I don’t doubt that we’ll see a major drop in scores by the US and China at this point, considering the fact that most students in both countries are not truly globally connected yet.

So how should we prepare our students to become more globally competent? Well for starters, I think the best experience is to get students out of their comfort zone, whether abroad or at home. For those who are going abroad, go beyond the comforts of a steady program (managed by local suppliers) and try to venture into the local society, whether going to the grocery market or starting your own bank account to taking a class in a foreign language. These are the first steps into integration. Furthermore, digging deeper into the culture requires you to be one with the people, start interacting with them and getting a deeper understanding of their perspective of THEIR WORLD around them. Research what they say and follow up with more questions about the unknown. For those who decide to stay at home, the world is coming to you! There is no place in the world by now that isn’t filled with an immigrant from some other place. Find them and talk to them about their perspective of YOUR WORLD. You will be surprised to find out what they think about it and maybe what you didn’t know about your own world.

How should we measure global competency then? In my understanding, global competency is built upon 3 main competencies: Empathy, Adaptability, Intercultural understanding & communication Empathy is a result of understanding others beyond just reading about them. How can we develop these competencies then? During my trip, I read up on A Whole New Mind by Dan Pink who shared about many different activities on how to develop our 6 senses (please see image below). I strongly agree with the one about volunteering to strengthen empathy as it plays such a critical role in developing further bonds with your community. Global volunteer projects exists all around us today and you can sign up for it anytime, check out Global Volunteers, Cross Cultural Solutions or Transitions Abroad. Indeed, this is the time where our worlds are open and ready for us to meet!
