Dear fellow Toastmasters and welcome guests,
Before I start my speech, I want to do 3 quick surveys here. If your answer is 'Yes', Please raise your hand.
Do you love your job?
Do you think that your job match to your passion?
Have you heard this career advice' fellow your passion and the money will follow?
Ok. Thank you.
Let's talk about my 3rd survey first. I believe many of your must have heard about Steven Jobs Stanford commencement. There is one point that people got really excited about: "Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. "
I have to admit that when I first heard this few years ago, I was so excited while worried. Because it sounds so right yet I can't figure out what I am really passionate about. I don't know what jobs fit for me.
After graduation, I was lucky enough to find a pretty good job. The position is called career development program or management trainee. I have the opportunity to rotate in 3 different positions before get to know what I really love.
Guess what? After 3 different positions, the perfect 'right' job is still nowhere. I was so concerned about trying to find the magic perfect job match to my passion that none of my 3 assignments really counts.
It made me thinking. Is there any pre-existing passion that match to some perfect career? What is my passion anyway? What if my passion is just shopping, reading or traveling ? Will some one pay me for that?
Of course...NOT.
A recent study found that that most young people say they have passions, but 95% of the passion often related to sports, dance, reading, and other not-highly-marketable interests.
It is not surprising, but it shocked me. If follow you passion is not a realistic career advice, then how to find a job you love?
I recently read a book named 'SO GOOD THAT THEY CAN NOT IGNORE YOU', from the author's point of view the best path to finding work you love is to become really good at something. Stop worrying about what you feel like doing and instead, become good at what you are doing. And passion will grow along as you get better. In other words, Passion is not only something you bored with, it is what you can create. You can create passion in any jobs you are doing . And you know what's also great about being good at what you are doing? Once your reputation is built up, it will open up possibilities to work you really want.
It really changed the way I see my career. Suddenly, I was not worried about finding out my mysterious passion and the perfect job match to that. Instead, I am focusing on building valuable skills and working well and see where that takes me. When I start to thinking this way, my job seems better than I thought before. As I get more excelled in my job and get more responsibilities, it gives me kind of fulfillment which is a major drive for me getting to work everyday.
Here is the chart you may have seen. When people entered the job market, he has to choose from what he loves, what he's good at, and what pays well. Well, some people believe that doing what you love and what pays well is just a dream. And doing what pays well and what you are good at will end up rich but bored. But that's not true. here is a story of my former CTO: he was a young scientist when he joined the company and don't know which area he really interested . But instead of worrying about what he feel like doing, he focused on creating something meaningful and then give it to the company. He was doing well on the first project which lead him to a big promotion. Then he was able to take more responsibilities and made bigger impact. When the success added up, more opportunities showed up. He was able to choose projects he really want. He successfully built a satisfactory career over the years. Eventually, he moved from what he was good at to what he really loved and end up happy and rich.
My time is short, let me summarize what I have to say. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is being good at what you are doing. If you have not find the job you love. Don't worry. Just make yourself be good at something, and you will end up rich and happy.
