The theme of this
exhibition is“rotate”and all the artworks
relates to a concept of“rotate.”In addition, as an abstract
sculpture-based exhibition, it can be regarded as an experiment in exploring
the relationship between the form of“rotate”and space. Furthermore, the
artworks do not have detailed instructions because the abstract artworks can be
appreciated without cultural and historic context. The audiences can explore
the link of“rotate”andspace in rotate-themed artworks.
The style of these artwork
can be clearfied intominimalism. To some extent, they belong toexpressionismbecause
viewers are able to interpret the authors’emotions during
appreciation. The names of some artworks also relate to a concept of“rotate”. In this case, the experiences of the
authors have thecommonalityduring their processes of artistic creation. Some of the artworks aremultidimensionalobjects, which can boost the viewers’curiosity to explore the
link of the artistic form and space.
There are 6 pieces of
artworks from RMIT collections displayed in this exhibition. The sizes of the
artworks are differences. One of the artworks is an abstract painting, the
others are abstract sculptures. The material of the sculptures are metal, which
can expressaesthetic
feelingsignificantly.
This project is designed
for holding in RMIT gallery. The gallery has applicable space to hold this
exhibition.
There are 6 artworks selected
from RMIT art collection in this exhibition. These artworks areStormy Weather,
Bagatelle, Circum 4, Untitled[siyah mash drawing] and Wall Sculpture. The viewers can detect the form of“rotate”, which is applied in the artworks.
Although the
theme of these artworks can be regarded as“rotate”, their visual effects are vary from
each other. This is because centre of rotation, direction of rotation and
rotation angle, these three elements are the key factors, which affect the
visual prescriptions of these artworks. Furthermore, the visual effects of the
simple structure and integrated composite structures of“rotate”can bring viewers different psychological
feelings.“Rotate”as a concept, offering a sense of
twisty and distorted.
These artworks
can be clarified into a variety of types based on their artistic characters.
For example, the theme of these artworks also can be viewed as“circle”or“loop”. The loops of the artworks can be
divided into two types, closed loop and unclosed loop. In addition, the artworks
also can be divided into two types, successive structure in space and non
consecutive structure.
In a word,“rotate”as a simple motion or concept, which
applied in these artworks, can offer abundant visual experience for viewers. The visual experience of these artworks toward“rotate”is this exhibition’s main aim. In this case, the
exhibition is an experiment to the abundance of visual effects in these rotate
theme artworks.
An artwork can
not be interpreted without cultural or historic context to some extent.
Appreciation without the context may lead the misunderstanding of the artwork.
For example, taotie design,a mythical ferocious animal pattern in Shang
dynasty(1600BC-1046BC, China) is used on the surface of sacrificial vessel. It
looks horrific but it means the power of kingship. However,“rotate”is a concept relates to motion.Rotate theme sculptures can be understood without the context becausethey are a type of pure artistic form, aconnection of space and“rotate”.
The style of
these artwork is minimalism. Firstly, the structure of these artworks are not
very complex in space. Secondly, the texture of material in these artworks is
not detailed, which means the artworks just express the natural character of
each material. Thirdly, every artwork can be decomposed into the fragments,
such as lines, loops , circles.
Some authors of
these artworks have relationships with each other. For example, Lenton Parade
Inge King are the members of the“Centre Five”, a splinter group found in 1960.
Peter Blizzard is influenced by Australian sculptors such as Inge King and
Lenton Parr(peterblizzard.com, 2015).
UntitledAli Baba Awrang
This
artworkis untitled and it is a ink
painting. All the visual elements in this artwork are lines. The shape of these
lines are thestrokesofArabic(Afghan Cultural House, 2015). The people from non Arabic cultural
background may not detect that the lines in this artwork are the strokes of
Arabic.
The shape of“A B C D”theseletters, from aview of artistic form, is rational. This is becausesymmetry, central symmetryandmirroringrelate a sense of the order in space. The
artwork relates to the letters, which is considered as rational because people’s interpretations are based on their language and cultural context.
Conversely, curves are widely adopted in the strokes of Arabic, which leads
that the form of Arabic has unique charm. The structure of the Arabic strokes
is vary fromlatin
letter.
This artwork can bring a
question,“how the structure of letters affect theaestheticspreference of the users”. For example, Chinese and Japanese prefer theframe structureofChinese characters, and applies this frame structure into
architecture. Therefore, this artwork reminds viewers the letters are not only
constitutions of the language but also a kind of visual elements.
The artistic form of this
artwork may be affected byDivisionism, orpointillism. All the visual elements in the artworks of
Divisionism are points. Indeed, the style of this artwork can be clarified asneo-impressionism.
The visual prescription of
this artwork associates with“hurricane”and“rotate”. Hurricane can be explained as a environmental phenomena that wind
rotates in the sky. In this case, this artwork can be named“Hurricane”. Although this artwork constitutes of the
Arabic strokes, it is stunning.
Stormy WeatherClement Meadmore
The style of this artwork isabstract
expressionismandminimalism(Gibson&Meadmore,1994). Thisartwork is the movement of a square in space
consecutively. Sculpture is a type of static arts but this abstract artwork can
provide a sense of dynamic. It is also can be viewed as the recording the
movement of a square.
The visual effect of a
square is rational and equilibrate, which means a sense of order. Conversely,
the track of the square connects with“rotate”and“curve”, which can be interpreted as“emotional”and“chaos”, which represents a sense of disorder.
As a unclosed loop, it can
be noticed the existence of two squares directly. In other hand, if the loop in
this artwork is closed, viewers cannot detect the existence of the squares
straightforward. However, this artwork does not relate to“rotate.”
There are two contrary
forms in this artwork, the squares and the track. This visual prescription of
this artwork can bring a sense of“rotate”and“disorder”.The squares relate
to the element of minimalism. Meanwhile, the track represents the element of
abstract expressionism.
“Stormy Weather”relates to a sense
of disorder. Author may expect to express that how can the orderly things exist in a disorderlyatmosphere.
This artwork is a multidimensionalobject(Zara Stanhope, 2006)
because it looks vary from each angle, which can motivate the viewers’curiosity in exploring this
artwork. For example, the disconnected loops can be seen as“connected”from a specific direction. The closed loop can be seen as being sliced
into several pieces from some specific directions. Therefore, separated visual
elements could have different relationships with each other. The direction,
which viewers are looking, determines the connection of two visual elements. In
this case, this multidimensional artwork is an experiment to explore the visual
diversity of separated visual elements in space.
The multidimensional
artwork is enlightened byE. Edmund
Husserl(1859~1938). In histheory, he studiesthe relationship
between phenomena and essence. Meanwhile , this artwork is also an experiment to explore the
connection of the appearance and essence. It seems that viewers can only see
the appearance of this artwork from different angle but can't fully detect the
interior beauty, because viewers’visual experience is restricted by the
ability of eyes. In this case, people’s visual experience
misguide them to detect the essence of objects.
This artwork can be decomposed into threeparts, a closed loop, a unclosed loop and a distorted unclosed loop. The threeloops are platelike, and this is only the artwork, which has the structure ofthe platelike loops.
The name of this artwork is“Bagatelle”,which means tiny things or akind of table game. As a multidimensional artwork, it can be regarded as avisual game. Without the knowledge of the game , the viewers are able to detecttheinterestingnessin this artwork. The artwork is an
experiment to explore the interestingness of the artistic expression in space.
Wall SculptureLenton Parr
The style of this artwork relates to a sense
of“Constructivism”because the visual
sensation of this artwork can bring a sense of“rotary movement”and Constructivism is a
style, which emphasizes the movement of artwork in space. The technique of this
artwork is complex, technical complexityis also a feature of Constructivism.
If viewers do not observe
this artwork with patient, they may think it is composed of several separated
platelike metals. From thisassumption, this artwork can be decomposed into four
parts, twosemicircles and two long plates. However, all the visual elements in this artwork
are connected with each other. In other words, this artwork is designed from a
platelikeintegratedmetal. This metal viatransformation, incisionis this artwork. This artwork can be
regarded an experiment to explore the visual expression of a integrated metal.
This artwork named“Wall Sculpture”and it is composed of a integrated metal. The
two long plated in this artwork can be regarded as“Wall”.“Wall”related to a concept of“obstacle”. It could be interpreted that obstacle is
not appear from external environment but also can form from the interior
structure itself. This artwork conveys personal emotion into artistic form.
The structure of thisartwork may imitate the specific structure ofa natural creature or a machine(Gleeson,1979). This artwork may expect to convert a
specific structure, which has a specific function, into a artistic form to
express its beauty. The process of artistic creation could be called the
process“function transformation”.
The sculpture sits well in
its natural environment. In this artwork, it explores the equilibrium of
sculpture and natural environment(Edquist& Grierson, 2008). For sake of the harmonyof its existence in this environment. Thereis a hole dig, which is applied to set asmall fraction of the circle of this artwork.
The material of thisartwork is rusted steel, which can enhance the visual effect of balance inoutdoor space. The size of this artwork is lager in comparison the otherartworks because theseartworks can bedisplayed indoors. This is a large outdoor sculpture. In this case, thisartwork can not be displayed directly in this exhibition. In addition, thevisual sensation of this artwork would be affected by the space it displays.Indeed, it can be moved to the RMIT gallery to some extent, but it beauty canbe fully detected. The scale of it is large, so the setting indoor space isill-suited.
This artwork can be
decomposed into two parts, a loop or circle and several steel frames. The
author of this artwork has interested in expressing the fragility of the
natural environment. On this occasion, this artwork can be understood in this
context. The circle can be regarded“nature’and the steel frames can be
viewed as“human”. The relationship between the circle and the steel frames may represent
the connection of nature and human.
In this exhibition, itcould be shoot a short film of this artwork, which could record the existenceof this artwork in this specific natural space.
This detailed instruction
is mainly from three perspectives, cultural context, the style, morphologic
expressionto analyse the beauty and
artistic value of each artwork. Cultural context does not influence viewers
significantly when they interpret the abstract sculptures to some extent. The
styles ofexpressionismandminimalismare easy to express the theme of“rotate”in space because“rotate”is a simple motion in physics. Although these artworks all relate to the
theme of“rotate”, they have a variety of visual prescriptions in their morphologic
expressions.
The themes of
representative artwork-based exhibition relate to cultural context, the style,
morphologic expression and performance content. However, the themes of abstract
artwork-based exhibition is the style, such asexpressionismexhibition andminimalismexhibition. This exhibition is an experiment to explore a new kind of
theme to display the abstract artworks. The basic artistic form of these
artworks is“rotate”. Viewers can appreciate these artworks in a given context, the theme of“rotate”. The theme can guide viewers when they interpret these artworks. In a
word, every abstract artwork has a specific context to be interpreted it
correctly but viewers do not need to explore this specific context and
interpret it correctly. This is because interpretation of artworks does not
have a standard answer. In this case, a exhibition canpreinstalla context, which can guide
viewers to understand artworks in a specific way. This is the objective of this
exhibition.
