1.1 The state-owned museums and galleries
The administration mode of the state-owned galleries and museums in China is still based on plannedeconomic system although the Chinese economic system has been reformed since1991(We call the state-owned galleries and museums “public institution”. It is similar with NPO). In this case, most of the galleries and museums could not well adapt this situation.
The curators of the state-owned galleries and museums are from the background of fine arts. They have skills in Chinese painting and other forms of fine arts. Moreover, they have adequate knowledge in protecting artworks and antiques because they were well educated in art schools. However, the problem is that their skills could not cope with the situation in economic context. This is because they don’t have enough experience in managing the galleries and museums as organizations. In other words, they lack administrative skills.
1.2 The commercial museums and galleries
With the development of Chinese economy, a large number of private galleried and museums have been built in the cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Although Chinese people became richer in recent decades, their educational level did not developed significantly in comparison with economy. In this context, the owners of the galleries and museums are likely to cater public interests. Lots of Chinese traditional elements are used improperly in some artworks in order to attract public attention. In comparison with the curators of the state-ownedgalleries and museums, they have practical skills in marketing but they only care about money.
1.3Public spaces
As Mao(the first chairman of communist party) said that that literature and arts servefor the socialism is basically serve for the people. Since New China was founded, the theme of the arts in public space is socialistic. Artists’creative ideas are highly influenced by the central government. Since 1978, thecentral government started to change its policy towards arts. It acknowledged that he main function of public arts was not only political propaganda but alsoto create a harmony society. However, the public art in China is developing unreasonably because the central government recognized the importance of public arts without relevant policies.
1.4 My idea towards the museums and galleries in China
In my opinion, intercommunication between thestated-owned and the private should be encouraged through the central government policy
