Here’s a quote from a study I can’t stop thinking about…
“The impact of police brutality is much broader than simply affecting the individuals who have experienced racialized violence. It sends a signal that there is little hope for justice.”
Imagine what that does to an individual’s epigenetics.
Imagine how feelings of powerlessness from excessive police force inadequate prosecution of perpetrators might impact a patient’s ability to advocate for themselves at the dentist or doctor’s office.
I’ll never know what it’s like for my Black readers and my Black patients.
But I do know this for sure: Racism is a driver of health inequality. It is a public health concern. It is on all of us to listen and to educate ourselves.
I’d love to hear your input on this issue, especially ideas around how we can use the Ask the Dentist platform to spread awareness, amplify Black perspectives, and work to close the gap in the racial healthcare disparity.
