My life in CUPL
Gone are the days when I studied in CUPL, China University of Political Science and Law. Not only did I learn expertise in the legal field, but also enjoy the keen atmosphere. When it comes to law, there are so many terminologies, which seem to be serious and boring. So I will share with you about campus, teachers and students of CUPL.
Located in Changping District, the campus is tranquil and peaceful. It is a place that is suitable for studying. CUPL offers students a well-equipped campus with contemporary facilities, modern technologies and historic buildings. The moment I went into the gate, I saw a large billboard saying “Welcome to CUPL for Summer Semester 2018”. What impressed me most is that the letters of CUPL were printed with photos of our professors, which showed warm welcome and sincere respect to them. We took a photo here for memory.
There is a statue of 钱端升 on the left, who is the first president of CUPL. Besides, he was one of the drafters of the First Constitution. This statue was established in honor of his great contribution to legislation. The main teaching building was named as 端升楼, which also showed his devotion to CUPL. The board 课比天大,hung from the ceiling in the hall, means studying is the most important.
In front of the gymnasium, stands a statue of bull. It is called 拓荒牛,the symbol of CUPL, which represents the spirit of perseverance and persistence. It is thousands of graduates of CUPL who push forward a country under the rule of law.
Our first professor is a Chinese and comes from shandong Province. Initially, he served as a judge assistant in 泰安. After graduation from Renmin University of China, he became a lecturer in Shandong University. Later he received full scholarship from University of Cambridge. It took him six years to get Ph.D. Now he is a professor in a British university and the dean of Confucius Institut. Maybe because he stayed in Uk for such a long time, he is not a traditional 山东大汉but very gentle in words and behavior. He would explain the theory patiently and list several examples. From an ordinary Chinese student to a professor in the United Kingdom, I have to say he tells us that it is studying hard that really changes your destiny.
Our second professor comes from America and his wife comes from Taiwan, so he can speak a little Chinese. In his first lesson, he asked me about my name. I slowly said Jinbao. I thought it was hard for him to pronounce. But he said Bao reminds him of full. I was amazed at his understanding. But I still had to explain that Bao in my name means little baby or treasure. You know there are so many Latin in Legal English. He has a good grasp of Latin. But his son complained that, “Dad, if you only spoke Latin to me when I was an infant, now I can speak Latin well.” He speaks in a loud voice and always miss the ring bell. But students focus on the bell. He complains, “Does the music play in a frequency that only Chinese can hear?” He has a strong sense of humor. Our classroom is filled with laughter. We all love him.
The students of CUPL are really intelligent and diligent. They would make full preparations before the class. They are active and they are willing to interact with professor. Legal English is quite different from public English. It is difficult for students to express ideas in Legal English. One day in class, when profess was talking about a professional topic which most students couldn’t understand. Then, one student said,“Professor, I can explain it in Chinese to all students. Blablabla.” Another student answered,“Professor, I want to debate in Chinese.Blablabla.” We changed to Chinese channel. And our professor was the only one in the classroom who didn’t know what we were talking about.
In CUPL, it’s easy to venture outside my comfort zone, collaborate with others and share insights. Here I can find the resources, inspiration and space I need to discover myself and make a difference. I really enjoyed the time studying in CUPL and I did learn a lot. CUPL, see you again.
