The reading passage proposes three theories to explain the causes of the strange sounds "quackers" that were detected by Russian submarines. In the lecture, the professor argues that although scientists remain unsure about what the sources of the bizarre sounds are, there are problems with all these theories.
First, the author in the reading passage maintains that the odd underwater sounds were in fact made by male and female orca whales when they were trying to attract a mate. However, the lecturer suggests that this theory is highly unlikely. Although orca populations were in the areas where the submarines were patrolling, they mostly lived near the surface of the water rather than deep in the ocean. Therefore, it is impossible for the submarines patrolling deep in the ocean to hear the orca sounds. Also, the orca sounds could have been detected by sonar if orca whales were nearby, but, in reality, sonar was unable to detect any solid moving objects.
Second, according to the reading, the "quackers" sounds were probably emitted by giant squid. However, the lecturer does not agree with this argument by citing a fact that these strange noises were first detected in 1960s, and the reports about them continued for two decades, but they suddenly completely disappeared in 1980s. As giant squid have always lived in the areas until today, they should not be the sensible reason to explain why the sounds suddenly started and suddenly stopped 20 years afterward.
Finally, the author in the reading suggests that the sounds were possibly caused by some military technology like the foreign submarines. On the other hand, the lecturer opposes the argument by saying that the objects that made the sounds "quackers" seemed to move around and changed directions very quickly, but the submarines are unable to do so. Also, submarines' engines generally make noises, but no such noises have been detected along with “quackers”. Today there is still no such technology to build submarines that can move so fast with such a silent engine.
