A small talk about Mr. Round and

Hello everyone. I am very glad to introduce one friend which loved by everybody—Mr. Round and Square. Yes, it is Chinese ancient money. By using it, girl like me in the past could buy the beautiful dress, flowers and food she likes.

And now, I have one question to you. Why ancientChinese people would call the coin money in name of Mr. Round and Square?

Yes, you are right! That’s because the coin money always has a square hole in the middle. The name came from its shape. It has two significant benefits. One is very obvious – save material. Such story shall go back to more 2000 years ago, at that time, the first emperor of China united the whole China for the first time in the history, and he deiced to unit all the money too. But he met a big problem, there was not enough copper to make enough coin money. When he was in big headache to find more copper, an officer gave him an idea to make a square hole in the coin. It was such a brilliant idea, and very soon, the government made the enough money for the whole country, and off course, all the coin was made into that shape. �

Another benefit comes from the firstbenefit, with such design, people can use a string to strung up many coins, sopeople can easily bring quite much money in one time, and also easily to do thebusiness with each other.

Except the benefits above, Mr. Round and Square also tell us the Cosmology of ancient Chinese. Our ancestors believe that the sky is round, and the earth is square, the whole universe is a big ball covered the earth. The sun, the moon, and stars are embedded in that big ball, they rise in the east and fall in the west, and bring the day and night, replace the spring and autumn every year.

Last but not least, Mr. Round and Square also tells the philosophy of life of Chinese people. The outer circle means that Chinese people are usually flexible and good at find different ways to resolve the problem. The inner square means that Chinese people are very persistent in the most fundamental principles and will never compromise.
