Lavender和sage

上次在写分享音乐的一篇《斯卡布罗集市Scarborough Fair》(翻译系列60)中，歌词中有sage，也就是鼠尾草，有位简友说和薰衣草很像，说实话我本不知道两者这么像，故特意好好上网查询学习了一下，增长了不少知道，也把它分享给大家啦！

薰衣草lavender，英文简明字典解释为“noun.any of various Old World aromatic shrubs or subshrubs with usually mauve or blue flowers; widely cultivated”“Adjective.of a pale purple color”，也就是当名词用就是“薰衣草，一种来自古老世界的芳香灌木或亚灌木，一般开淡紫色或蓝色花朵，广泛被种植”，作为形容词，可以叫“薰衣紫的”。如下图：

牛津字典解释lavender又有所不同，我们一起来看看，a garden plant or bush with bunches of purple flowers with a sweet smell 熏衣草（花园植物或灌木，开紫花，有香味），the flowers of the lavender plant that have been dried, used for making sheets, clothes, etc. smell nice 干熏衣草花（用以熏香衣物等），lavender oil薰衣草油。“a pale purple colour 淡紫色”这个和前面的简明字典说法几乎一致。

接着我们来看这个“sage”，简明字典给了做名字的三个意思，如下：

1.a mentor in spiritual and philosophical topics who is renowned for profound wisdom.圣人，贤人，智者

2.aromatic fresh or dried gray-green leaves used widely as seasoning for meats and fowl and game etc.鼠尾草(可用做调料)

3.any of various plants of the genus Salvia; a cosmopolitan herb.鼠尾草属，一类草属，一种世界范围的香草

此外作为Adjective，简明字典也给了两个意思，如下：

1.having wisdom that comes with age and experience，智慧的

2.of the gray-green color of sage leaves，灰绿色的，鼠尾草色的。

如果我们仔细看图，这两者还是区别很大的，薰衣草是一节一节的，上下开的淡紫色花朵几乎一致。但是，鼠尾草的花朵是紧密排列，上尖下粗。

当然两者颜色太像了，只不过英文在单词解释方面却不同，一个是pale purple color，淡紫色，一个用gray-green color，也就是灰绿色。

诚然这里的pale 和gray大致意思相同，都是“灰白的，暗淡的，阴暗的”。但是，我们要知道，紫色由红蓝色混合搭配而成，绿色是由黄兰混合搭配而成。所以，这里的两种植物都有些偏蓝也就可想而知了。
