Some people believe that children can learn effectively by watching TV and they should be encouraged to watch TV both at home and at school. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Watching TV, especially informative television, is considered as an effective study method, since audio-visual informationvisual can easily draw students’ attention and cultivate their interess. Although many TV programmes have educational value, I do not agree that students ahould have more television time.
Television viewing may influence children’s study and other activities which can benefit their development. It is widely known that watching TV can distract their attention, especially without adults’ supervision. They may not able to concentrate on learning tasks, which can result in the declining of their test scores. And it is difficult for children to take part in the interactive activities which can promote their brain development, such as reading, singing and communicating.
Besides, the increasing screen time of children may have an adverse impact on their physical health. They tend to sit in front of screen for several hours, instead of playing games or doing sports with peers. And they are more likely to be confronted with the problem of obesity, poor sights and tiredness. As a result, they have no energy to cope with study and lose self-confidence gradually.
On the other hand, I know that television can expose children to a world of knowledge. A number of educational TV program aimed at children help them to have a deep insight into different subjects. For example, documentaries offer children the opportunities to have a good understand of historical events, and some foreign programme can help them gain information about language. All of these are the complements to the knowledge they learnt at school.
To sum up, instead of encouraging this habit, parents and teachers are expected to impose restrictions on children’s television viewing. Excessive screen time will have an adverse impact on their studying, rather than promoting their academic performance.
