(原文)Define Yourself, or Be Inaccurately Defined by Others

Now I think it's one of the most useless questions an adult can ask a child -- What do you want to be when you grow up? As if growing up is finite. As if at some point you become something and that's the end.

    ……

For me becoming isn't about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as forward motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self.

    ……

What I've learned is this: All of them have had doubters. Some continue to have roaring, stadium-sized collections of critics and naysayers who will shout I told you so at every little misstep or mistake. The noise doesn't go away, but the most successful people I know figured out how to live with it, to lean on the people who believe in them, and to push onward with their goals.

    ……

If you don't get out there and define yourself, you'll be quickly and inaccurately defined by others.

    ——自 《Becoming》,Michelle Obama

    句型提取

If you don't get out there and define yourself, you'll be quickly and inaccurately defined by others.
    (如果你不走出来、改变你自己,就将迅速地、粗糙地被别人所改变。)

(仿写)Getting Married, That's Not the End

“Why are you not married at such age?” “Don't you think life is incomplete without marriage?” Many woman in workplace would be questioned like this.

I think it's one of the most unreasonable questions an adult can spit out. As if getting married is finite. As if at some point you become wife and mother and that's the end. People won't ask you for any more after that. A woman reaches her glass ceiling when she's walking to the other end of red carpet.

For me getting married isn't about arriving somewhere significant or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as transfer station, an evolving way to reach continuously toward a better self.

What I've learned is this: All of your living days has bad weathers. Some turn to be shinning, stadium-sized raining. The bad weathers don't go away, but the most successful people I know figured out how to live with it, to find a way that they can see it through and believe in, and to push onward with their goals.

Remember, if you don't get out there and define yourself, you'll be quickly and inaccurately defined by others.
