Linking words of contrast对比连词

We use words and phrases like though, although and even though to link two clauses together. We call them linking words of contrast.
我们使用though,although 和 even though这些单词/短语,将两个子句链接在一起。我们把这这类词叫做对比连词。

①Marta broke her leg a year ago.
②Marta ran a marathon last weekend.

Despite breaking her leg a year ago, Marta ran a marathon last weekend.
尽管一年前摔断了腿,但玛塔上周末还是参加了马拉松比赛。

①Binh loves football.
②Binh has never been to a professional football match.

Though Binh loves football, he's never seen a professional match.
尽管Binh热爱足球,但他从未看过职业比赛。

Although, even though and though go in front of a clause. They can go at the beginning or middle of a sentence.
Although, even though and though在从句的前面。 他们可以在句子的开头或中间。
Although Endang worked hard, she failed her exams.
Endang failed her exams, although she worked hard.
尽管Endang努力工作,但考试不及格。

Though it was cold, Katya only wore a t-shirt.
Katya only wore a t-shirt, though it was cold.

Despite and in spite of go in front of nouns or gerunds. They can also go at the beginning or middle of sentences.

Despite smoking 40 cigarettes a day, my grandfather lived to 100.
My grandfather lived to 100, despite smoking 100 cigarettes a day.
In spite of the terrible weather, they had a nice holiday.
They had a nice holiday, in spite of the terrible weather.

Summary

1. However[haʊˈevə(r)]

However can occur at the start of a sentence- it is followed by a comma and then a clause. However can also come in the middle of a sentence to separate two clauses.

However,它可能出现在句子的开头-它后面是逗号,然后是子句。

Many people think it rains in England all the time. However, this is only partly true - it rains 95% of the time and the other 5% it's overcast.【However+“,”+句子】

2. Although[ɔːlˈðəʊ]=even though

Although can come in the middle or at the beginning of a sentence and introduces a subordinate clause. It can be replaced with though and even though.
although可以出现在句子的中间或开头,并引入一个从句。 although=though=even though ,他们可以互换。

Although it is true that we are good at following rules, English people do not love queuing!

3. Despite [dɪˈspaɪt]= in spite of
Despite appears at the beginning of the clause or in the middle of a sentence.It is always followed by a noun or verb + ING.
It can be replaced with in spite of.

Despite出现在句子的开头或句子的中间。 它后面总是带有名词或动词+ ING(动名词)。
可以被in spite of替换。

Despite being a little formal, English people are actually very warm-hearted.

4. While [waɪl]

While joins two contrasting clauses together and sits at the beginning of one of the clauses. Usually at the beginning of the sentence. In a more formal and literary style, we can say whilst.
While将两个不同的子句连接在一起,并位于其中一个子句的开头。 通常在句子开头。 在一个更正式和文学样式的情景,我们可以用whilst。

While international opinion of our food is not good, I think that English food is delicious!
