When talking about something had been stolen, it reminds me of the wallet which had been stolen and given back. It happened during one of my business trips in Shanghai. When I was walking with a client in West Nanjing Road, someone jostled ['dʒɑsl]me in a sudden. I had been so deep in the conversation with client that I didn't paid much attention on my backpack. Unfortunately, I found my backpack was cut open and the wallet was missing when returned back to hotel. There is an old saying in China -- 'You will suffer some unexpected financial losses as to avoid calamity[kə'læməti].’‘ So I tried to look on the bright said like the old saying tells. Several days later, however, I received a call from a man, who claimed that he picked up a wallet with my business card inside in the street corner, so he called to confirm if it was my wallet. If yes, I had better pay him 500 yuan to get it back. I turned the whole thing over in my mind. I think maybe the man was the thief who stole the wallet and took all the money away, then he pretended accidentally picking it up in the street. Maybe I should call the police in the first place, but it would probably prove difficult to identify the man a thief. What's more, the man already had my detailed personal information about my job, identity card and bank accounts. In the end, I paid him the money and got my wallet back.
Q: What about the downsides of modern technology?
It's said technology isn't the problem, it's the thinking that drives technology that is the problem. The will to efficiency, to calculation, the constant energy of keeping busy with life, is the problem. We enjoy the convenience brought about by science and technology. However, this can also be distraction rather than help. Anyway, it's up to your own choice, you cannot put the blame on technology.
