Five for silver

Six for gold

Seven for a secret

Never to be told

1是忧愁，2是快乐，

3是女孩，4是男孩，

5是白银，6是黄金，

7是一个从未说出口的秘密。

这首童谣是关于喜鹊的传统童谣，古时相信喜鹊的数量决定着运气的好坏。

早在16世纪早期的英国文化中，喜鹊被认为是一种预示着不祥的鸟类。具体来说，单数预示将会发生不好的事情，双数则是好事。

约在1780年时，这首童谣的第一个版本由John Brand撰写发表：

One for sorrow,

Two for mirth,

Three for a funeral

And four for birth.

后来在1846年 Michael Aislabie Denham改编版本出现：

One for sorrow,

Two for mirth

Three for a funeral,

Four for birth

Five for heaven

Six for hell

Seven for the devil, his own self.

一代表悲伤

二代表欢乐

三预示将有一场葬礼

四预示将有新生命降临

五代表地狱

六代表天堂

七代表他自己会成为一个恶魔

自此以后就有越来越多的改编版本出现，不断的丰富着歌曲的含义和韵律。
