My husband and I were going to have our very first overnight backpacking & camping trip by ourselves. Only two of us. Two newbies. We were beyond excited.
My husband bought a sleeping bag online while I borrowed mine from my coworker. He ordered a mummy shape sleeping bag, rated 20F (lowest temperature limit). The moment that sleeping bag order arrived, I announced that I would give it a try by sleeping in it that night on our balcony.
When the night fell, I unrolled my sleeping pad, which was a therm-a-rest closed foam pad, on the balcony floor first. Then, I flatten the sleeping bag and got it.
It was pretty warm and I fell sleep very fast. I woke up several times at night because I can feel the floor. I thought I should be fine with the thin foam pad but my back felt tired. I changed to side position, then on my back, then to the other side. I almost regretted that I didn't bring a roll of shirts in the bag, so that it can be used as a cushion under my back (back position) or between my legs (side position). I would definitely do that next time. It was too cold to get out in the middle of the night, so I slept over it.
I ended up waking up around 5:30am, shifting to my real bed and sleeping two more hours to compensate my time of fighting with changing positions at night.
Even so, I enjoyed sleeping in a sleeping bag. It made me feel like I was a caterpillar :)
