I think about this quote often. And the successful application of this quote is a major key to success. Think about it. In almost any scenario you can think of, would you be better off:
Having the person you’re dealing with think you’re less intelligent than you truly are
Having them realize just how smart you are or turning them off by showing off
What does a successful pool shark do?
At first, they pretend like they’re not all that good during the first few games, lose some money up-front, only to win it back tenfold when they suckered their opponent into making big bets.
And you don’t even have to think of this trait in terms of something dubious like a con. In general, it’s okay, and usually beneficial, for people to underestimate you.
For adversaries, you catch them by surprise. For people you want to connect with, slowly revealing your intelligence will pleasantly surprise them.
Intellectual humility, in general, is a psychological superpower you can use to your advantage in many different areas.
