Vulcan(伏尔坎)
Vulcan is the Roman counterpart(对应的) of the Greek god Hephaestus, god of fire and blacksmith(铁匠). In some versions of the myth, the fire that Prometheus gave to man was actually stolen from Hephaestus’ forge(打铁炉).
伏尔坎是希腊火神与匠神赫菲斯托斯对应的罗马名字。在一些版本的神话中,普罗米修斯送给人类的火种就是从赫菲斯托斯的打铁炉里偷来的。
Hephaestus was believed to have crafted such magnificent equipment as Hermes’ winged helmet and sandals, Aphrodite’s famed girdle, Achilles’ armor, Heracles’ bronze clappers and Eros’ (爱神丘比特)bow and arrows.
赫菲斯托斯手艺精湛,制作出了很多奇妙的东西,譬如:赫耳墨斯带翅膀的头盔和飞鞋、阿芙洛蒂忒著名的腰带、阿喀琉斯的铠甲、海格立斯的青铜响板以及厄洛斯的弓箭。
The word volcano(火山) is derived from Vulcano, a volcanic island in Italy, which was apparently named after Vulcan, the Roman god of fire.
火山(volcano)一词源于伏尔坎诺(Vulcano),显然这座意大利的火山岛正是以火神伏尔坎(Vulcan)命名的。
Cornucopia(丰饶角)
It is said that when Zeus was an infant, he was suckled from the horn of a goat. Later, this horn was filled with flowers and fruits and given to Zeus as a present. The filled horn served as a symbol of abundance(富饶) since then.
传说在宙斯还是个小婴儿时,他从一只公羊角里吸吮乳汁。后来仙女们就把这只公羊角装满鲜花和水果送给宙斯作为礼物。从此,装满东西的公羊角就成了富饶的标志。
The word cornucopia(丰饶角), in Greek, means “horn of plenty”. Now with the meaning “an inexhaustible(用不完的) store of something”, cornucopia is often seen on Thanksgiving Day.
cornucopia(丰饶角)这个词在希腊语中的意思就是“装满东西的角”。如今,这个代表“大量、丰盛”的东西常常在感恩节出现。
