Hippocrene（神马灵泉）

Hippocrene literally（照字面的意思） means “Fountain of the Horse”. According to the myth, there was once a singing contest between the Muses and the Pierides, the daughters of King Pierus, on Mount Helicon.

Hippocrene一词的本义是“神马之泉”。传说缪斯女神和国王庇厄洛斯的女儿皮厄里得斯曾进行过一场歌唱比赛。

The Muses sang with such extraordinary power that even the mountain raised itself in joyous response. With disbelief, Poseidon sent Pegasus, the white winged horse and child of Medusa, to check the boldness of the mountain in daring to move without his permission.

期间，缪斯女神的歌声婉转动听，令整座赫利孔山随之起舞。海神波塞冬对于大山未经允许便擅自移动的做法心生不满，派美杜莎的孩子、飞马珀加索斯前去查看。

Upon reaching the summit, Pegasus stamped the ground with his hoofs（蹄）, and out gushed（涌出） the waters of Hippocrene, which afterwards became the sacred fount to bring forth poetic or artistic inspiration.

珀加索斯抵达山顶后，马蹄刚一落地，一道泉水便喷涌而出，后来，“神马之泉”便成了诗歌或艺术创作的灵感之泉。

The prefix（前缀） hippo- means “horse” in Greek. It could be seen in such words as hippocampus, hippodrome, hippology, hippomania, hippophobia.

在希腊语中，hippo-的意思是“马”，这个前缀出现在了hippocampus（海马）、hippodrome（赛马场）、hippology（马学）、hippomania（爱马癖）和hippophobia（恐马症）

The word hippo now is understood as the shortened（缩短的） form for hippopotamus. In the story of Harry Potter, there is a magical creature called hippogriff.

等这些词中。如今hippo一般作为hippopotamus（河马）一词的缩略形式。在《哈利波特》的故事中，有一种神奇的生物名叫“鹰头马身有翼兽（hippogriff）”。
